Post updates by email:

As much as I’m in the minority of loving winter over summer because I much prefer being cold than hot, I know that I’m equally in the minority when it comes to my dislike of ONIONS.

Well…allow me to be a bit clearer on that.

It’s not really onions I dislike because I don’t mind their flavor in my food, it’s more so about the way they SMELL.

Especially raw onions.

Whenever I smell onions, I look around with my nose all pinched together and think to myself, “I wonder who’s got the smelly armpits?”

And then I quickly sniff my own….just to make sure it’s not ME.

Have you ever noticed how if you touch an onion with your hands, the smell stays on your fingertips for about the next TEN years????

And please don’t suggest I try rubbing a lemon on my hands because I’ve already attempted that and it doesn't work. In fact, I’ve rubbed a whole lemon TREE on my hands, yet all I got were fingertips that smelled like lemon scented ONIONS.

This is why whenever I go out for lunch and order a sandwich at my favorite deli, I will always remind them to NOT put onions ON or anywhere NEAR my sandwich because I don’t want their smell on me when I go back to work. There’s nothing worse than having a cosmetic sales associate do a moisturizer demonstration on a customer’s face, while their hands and breath smell like armpit manure.

Anyway, the whole reason for this post today is to share a story that happened to me earlier this week, concerning my dreadful disdain for the scent of onions.

Monday night, I purchase a premade Greek salad from Super Fresh to pair with a nice hot bowl of chicken noodle soup. While still in the store, I examined the contents thorough the plastic container, just to see how many onion slices they put on top. There appeared to be a minimal, so I purchased it.

HOWEVER, much to my surprise....

After I got home and took the lid off and began scooping out the onions with a fork, I quickly discovered just how MANY onion slices were cleverly hidden underneath the lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and feta cheese.

HA! Those sneaky little bastards.

The entire salad was swimming in an undertow of onions!

And the most frustrating part about it was that the onions kept getting stuck on the end of the fork, so I had use my fingers to remove them. At one point, I got so mad that I began FLINGING the onions off the fork into the trash can, only to have them go SAILING through the air; landing all over my kitchenette floor and walls.

My entire apartment began to smell like an onion field.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard such ear-melting profanity come out of my mouth as it did that night.

My two favorite words were MOTHER and FUCKER.

Anyway, after finally peeling the onions off the four walls of my studio apartment and then squirting them down with a bottle of Febreze, I wrapped the onion slices in FOUR plastic bags and then shoved the bag way at the bottom of the trash can, so that I didn’t have to smell them anymore…YET….hours later, when I opened the trash can to throw something out, I got hit in the nose with a boxing glove of ONION.

So, do you know what I did?

I grabbed that plastic bag of onions and then took the elevator down to the basement level of my apartment building, whereupon I DITCHED those suckers into the dumpster.

GOOD. RIDDANCE.

However, later that night after I went to sleep, I had a HORRIBLE nightmare.

A nightmare in which I was forced to take a job as sales representative for a new perfume on the market….

Have a GLORIOUS weekend everyone!

  1. OMG I use a lot of onions. I actually don't smell them too much when I'm slicing because I leave the skin on as long as I can. That's to remove the watery eye syndrome though, I never thought about the smell on the hands. Mind you, that's probably because I always wear disposable gloves when I cook. Ooooh perhaps I do smell of onions and don't realise it. Perhaps that's why people walk a million miles away from me when I'm out haha. Seriously though, I can understand your dilemma with regard to your work. And there's one positive you CAN say about onions is that they provide a very entertaining post. Have a wonderfully angst free weekend.

  2. Onions will funk up a person, and a house, badly.

You're 100% right, they smell like horrible BO.

And, I cracked up when I read,

"And please don’t suggest I try rubbing a lemon on my hands because I’ve already attempted that and it doesn't work. In fact, I’ve rubbed a whole lemon TREE on my hands, yet all I got were fingertips that smelled like lemon scented ONIONS."

Seriously, this whole post cracked me up. Especially the part where you get up and throw them out in the dumpster because no amount of Fabreeze or plastic bags can stop the odor of the onion!

OMG...for almost TWO days after I threw them out, I could STILL smell the residue of those RETCHED things.

"....throw them out in the dumpster because no amount of Fabreeze or plastic bags can stop the odor of the onion!"

HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHA! I SO was thinking of YOU because I know how the two of us are Febreze addicts!

" I never thought about the smell on the hands. Mind you, that's probably because I always wear disposable gloves when I cook."

It's so ironic you mentioned wearing gloves because I was SO wishing I had put on my dish washing gloves before I took the onions out of the salad. You just gave me a great idea for the future - buy some disposable gloves! Now why the hell didn't I think of that!?!

" Ooooh perhaps I do smell of onions and don't realise it. Perhaps that's why people walk a million miles away from me when I'm out haha"

    HAHAHAHAHAHA! TOO FUNNY!

"Seriously though, I can understand your dilemma with regard to your work. "

Yes, that's the thing. Being in the cosmetic/fragrance business, I definitely can't have that smell on me while I'm at work. I'm also a light smoker, but will NOT smoke while I'm at work because there's nothing worse than cigarette smell on someone's clothes.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. LOVED your comment!

  5. I don't mind the smell of onions except on my hands, which is why I have a metal soap bar. It takes away the smell of onions, garlic etc like magic. See here http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Removes-Remover-kitchen-Forever/dp/B001F1S7WG.

  6. LOL!!! I sympathize with you, Ron, as I have what must be the best sniffer this side of the Mississippi!!! I can smell things a mile away. It's a blessing and a curse!!! I don't like the smell of raw onions either, and I agree....you CAN'T get rid of the smell on your hands! And I can never remember to ask them to leave off the onions on my salads or sandwiches, so I end up trying to pick the damn things off with just my fingernails to avoid skin contact!

And the Febreeze shout out got a laugh from me! LOVE THAT STUFF!

  8. Relate so well to this post. As well as wearing plastic gloves (the ones that fit really tightly are best) another trick is to pretend you have a cold - it closes off the area in the nose that does the smelling. Another trick; wrap the discarded onion and/or peel in paper, place in biodegradeable plastic bag athen put in the the freezer. Once they are frozen put them in the dumspter. This really helps to minimise the smell.
Happy sald devouring, Tezza (from downunder)

  9. An undertow of onions! Hilarious post, Ron, even though I don't share your distaste for the noble onion. I love the damn things! In my first job out of school, I used to flirt with a young woman in the mail department. I was kind of brash (surprising, no?) and she told me "I like you the same way I like onions!" I told her that onions were good for her, but she didn't want to hear it. Oh, well. Have a great weekend, buddy, and pleasant dreams...of onions!!

I like cooked onion but can't stand them raw. Why do places put so many on sandwiches and salads anyway?
I use lemon when I wash my hands; helps take the odor away, but not always entirely.

  16. Hey there SuziCate~

"An onion is akin to a really, REALLY bad date...the aroma lingers for a VERY long time!"

    Bwhhahaahahahhahahahaa! That was BRILLIANT! Touche!

"I like cooked onion but can't stand them raw. Why do places put so many on sandwiches and salads anyway? "

Cooked onions don't seem to have the intense odor that raw onions do, so that's why I don't mind their flavor in, say, a soup. And I agree....places put entirely too many on a salad or in a sandwich. Also, I will always ask for my salad dressing on the side because if I don't the DRENCH the salad.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend. Have a BEAUTIFUL weekend!

    Hahahahah! NO KIDDING!!!

I feel for you. And I can sympathise from a very personal point of view regarding that sneaky salad since I can't eat raw onion anymore due to my stupid acid reflux. Why is it that people think raw onion should go in everything salady? WHY?? And casserole mixes are full of the stuff, too, in great fat chunks. AARGHH!!

A little onion is fine. It makes things taste good. A lot of onion, however (especially raw) is foul.

Have you tried rubbing your hands with raw potato? That is supposed to work - better than lemon.

""There’s nothing worse than having a cosmetic sales associate do a moisturizer demonstration on a customer’s face, while their hands and breath smell like armpit manure."

HA! Ain't it the truth? And I actually work with people who DO eat onions during their lunch break and it totally flips me out!?!

"Why is it that people think raw onion should go in everything salady? WHY?? "

I have no idea, but it's yucky. Here in Philly, steak sandwiches are a very popular tradition, and you should see the amount of onions some people put on them - it ends up being nothing but an ONION sandwich - HA!

"A little onion is fine. It makes things taste good. A lot of onion, however (especially raw) is foul."

    Amen!

No, I haven't tried rubbing a raw potato on my hands, but now that you mentioned it, I've heard that before. I think my mother may have told me that when I was a kid. Thanks for reminding me!

  19. Hey Ron!

I can TOTALLY relate to this post. I do like onions, but this story reminded me of something that happened when I was in college.

Our honor society was having a picnic with burgers and hot dogs, and people were to sign up for what to bring. I missed the meeting and when I got up with the coordinator later on, the only thing left that they needed was onions.

If you ever saw the birthday party episode of “Friends” where Phoebe was put in charge of cups and ice, and went completely overboard, you can almost picture what I was like being in charge of onions.

I brought both Vidalia and red onions, cut in different ways; sliced, rings, diced. It was insane, I know, but I like to go “all out”.

I packed all this up in tupperware containers and drove them to the picnic site.
The smell of onion remained in my poor car for THREE MONTHS. Nothing I did could get it out!

    Thanks for sharing, darlin’!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

    XOXO

...I for one don't mind onions. I like 'em in all kinds of dishes and don't mind the smell or the smell on my hands afterwards. Yeah, yeah, I'ma dork. The only time I don't care for them is when you get the ones that are extremely pungent. I mean you can't get within a 6 ft. radius and your eyes are beginning to tear. I began chopping on one of 'em yesterday and I finally had to throw it in the trash because there was no way that something THAT strong could be eaten in anything. Whew-wee it was strong. *shudders*

..."I got hit in the nose with a boxing glove of ONION." - *giggle*snort* I got a visual. :o)

  21. Cristy has an aversion to onions too - she calls them "alpha" vegetables because of their dominating flavor. I cook with them much less than I used to and toss out the unused portion because I'm so with you on the lingering smell of a raw onion. Even triple wrapping in plastic and sealing in a rubbermaid container is no match for an onion. Makes the entire refrigerator reek. so can't handle that!

Tee, hee....aren't I silly. I went a bit INSANE with this post!

".I for one don't mind onions. I like 'em in all kinds of dishes and don't mind the smell or the smell on my hands afterwards. Yeah, yeah, I'ma dork."

No way...you're not a dork at all. Like I shared, most people adore onions, so really, "I'm" the dork. And it's odd because I'm Italian, and most Italian's LOVE onions. AND garlic (which I do). However, it's the LINGERING smell of the onions that drives me insane.

    Armpit.

"The only time I don't care for them is when you get the ones that are extremely pungent. I mean you can't get within a 6 ft. radius and your eyes are beginning to tear."

It's funny you mentioned 'tearing' because when I was a kid, I would sit in the kitchen and watch my mother chop an onion and tear. And I always thought it was because she was SAD about something - HAHAHHAHAHAHA!

"...And I love that last photo. Did you create it?"

Thank you. Yes, I PARTIALLY created it. I found the actual photo online, but then uploaded it to my favorite online photo editing software (Lunapic dot com) and then added the various fonts to make it into a fake ad for a bottle of perfume. I had so much fun making it too!

this is so funny and so true but you did not mention the lovely scent of dried onions in the little jars supposedly used for 'cooking'. make me want to vomit, they are so bad and garlic powder? not much better. i do adore real live LIVING garlic!! i am betting you do too.

if you ever get the chance in that city you live in, to taste homegrown onions, especially vidalia or sweet onions, you may change your mind. nothing like them piled on a big burger-a thing of my past! ;)

  34. You'd have to write it Eau d'Oignon... to be Frenchy-correct;) Or you could go with Ode à l'Oignon. Ode to Onion. Oh là là!

Well, call me super weird, but I actually like the smell that stays on fingers, if only very very minor (plus I don't work in perfumes), maybe because I have this happen to me very rarely. Raw onions give me tummy burn - lots of things do that, my tummy is a very sensitive of a being.

The day-after stink is awful. I had some fried calamari yesterday (avec oignons I realize now), and I feel like I am sensing it today. Yikes! Yep, I had some fried food! A major step of victory for me in terms of eating freely and what I want. No restricting. Kicking anorexia's butt. I went out with a new gal pal and we drank red wine and munched on starters. It was super sweet. Just living, laughing, planning a gals trip to Miami - and not second-guessing or beating myself up.

I am trying to live freely.Trying to kick anorexia out of my life. Riddance. Just like you with onions. Some things have to go. You didn't want those onions, I didn't want an eating disorder. It happened. Now I am talking about it and thus hoping to have a team around me, plus help others along the way, to stay on my side when the bad voice tells me "Susa, you are nothing if you don't skimp out of those calories".

  41. My two favorite words were MOTHER and FUCKER.
    Oh. ROFL
Why do I NOT have a difficult time envisioning this?! ;-)

I use a lot of onion when I cook--it helps make the ucky stuff I get to eat taste a wee better. And I don't bother taking the skin off until I chop it in two the 'wrong' way--I cut close to the rootline all the way to the top, then cut the other way and voile'...chopped onion without the tears and no abundance of onion juice on the hands.
I use steel soap afterwards, which works like a charm.
And I immediately take the roots, top and skin to the outside trash.
    Done!

But I'm with ya on onion overload on a salad. Umm......no thanks. And if the boogers hid 'em under all the lettuce.....RAWR!! LOL NOT that I'd be flinging 'em around. I'd ditch the salad. I wanna taste all of the veggies, tyvm.

  42. Hiya Mel~

"My two favorite words were MOTHER and FUCKER.
    Oh. ROFL

    *tee, hee*

    Aren't I wicked? And OMG...did I EVER use them!

"I use steel soap afterwards, which works like a charm."

Yes, in fact, one of my other blogging friends suggested the same thing. So judging from both your raves....I'm sure it works. I may look for one of those in Williams-Sonoma, because I have a feeling they might carry it.

"And I immediately take the roots, top and skin to the outside trash.
    Done!"

Yup, that's what I should have done when I first disposed of them.

"But I'm with ya on onion overload on a salad. Umm......no thanks. And if the boogers hid 'em under all the lettuce.....RAWR!"

Ain't it the pits when they do that? And you're right, too many onions distract from the taste of the all the other veggies.

Thanks oodles for stopping by, dear lady. Hope you're having a lovely weekend.

P.S. and again, I LOVED your snow angel!!!

  43. Oh, no! Sorry about the onion fiasco. You know we're always in sync but not in this case. I LOOOOOVVVEEE onions. In fact, I'll add a little olive oil to a pan and sautee an entire onion for a snack! Hmmm.....maybe that's why I can't keep a man...... :-)

  44. Hey there Chrissy~

"You know we're always in sync but not in this case. I LOOOOOVVVEEE onions. "

Aw....that's okay, girl. We're still TWINS because we BOTH love black jelly beans, right?

Like I shared, I know I'm in the MAJOR minority when it comes to onions because most people LOVE em'!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, twin. Hope you're having a FAB weekend!

X to you and the gang!

P.S. hey, guess what? I finally SNOWED today! Yahooooooo!

  45. Lol Ronnie sounds like you had quite a disaster on your hands this week! I share the hate for onion smell that you have however I dont mind so much cooked onions. That nightmare sounds truly awful though. What would be worst is if you had a dream that your new favorite cologne was onion scented! Ugh! I cant imagine spraying anything with that scent on my body! I might as well piss off a skunk and get sprayed by one of them!

  46. Good morning Shae~

"Ronnie sounds like you had quite a disaster on your hands this week."

Yes, it's like that saying, 'The more you push something away...the closer it gets"

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

"What would be worst is if you had a dream that your new favorite cologne was onion scented!"

    OMG...... I. WOULD. DIE.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"I cant imagine spraying anything with that scent on my body! I might as well piss off a skunk and get sprayed by one of them!"

Ditto. And the scent of skunk probably doesn't last as long as an ONION.

    Tee, hee!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, girl. Hope you're enjoying a great weekend!

P.S. thanks again for sharing that very informative video on your last post. It was great!

  47. Ha ha! I can see you now - thrashing about with your fork! One question: Why didn't you use a knife also? Stick it with the fork..... scrape it off with the knife :)

I also hate the smell that wafts out when we open our waste bin. Unfortunately onions leave their smell wherever they've been. We have a nicer dicer that cuts our onions up - no more smelly fingers, but I have to give that a really good scrub after!

I love raw onions, but hate them when they're cooked. Nothing nicer than a cheese and raw onion sandwich.

  48. Goooood morning Babs~

"One question: Why didn't you use a knife also? Stick it with the fork..... scrape it off with the knife :)"

DUH! You're absolutely right....and why didn't "I" think of that?!?! Thank you for sharing that info. because next time I will!

" Unfortunately onions leave their smell wherever they've been. We have a nicer dicer that cuts our onions up - no more smelly fingers, but I have to give that a really good scrub after! "

Yes, I've seen those dicer's in kitchen stores. I really should get one because they would be great for dicing things like celery too.

"Nothing nicer than a cheese and raw onion sandwich."

    You GO, girl!

I know that I am SO in the minority when it comes to onions.

Thanks oodles for stopping by, Babs. And thanks again for the knife and fork suggestion!

    Have a faaaaaaaabulous Sunday!

  49. I like onions in food, not the plethora you got, but a few. I do use them a lot in cooking. Raw, not so much.

Try rubbing you hands on something stainless steel, it should take away the smell. Works for fishy smells, too.

The vision of you tossing onions all over made me smile. Terrible but true.

Hope the rest of your weekend was odor free!

  50. Hey there Lady Nitebyrd~

"Try rubbing you hands on something stainless steel, it should take away the smell. Works for fishy smells, too."

Thank you so much for sharing that because you're the third person to mention about the stainless steel. In fact, Akelamalu uses a stainless steel bar of soap and swears by it!

"The vision of you tossing onions all over made me smile. Terrible but true.'

HA! Actually, thinking back, it was HILARIOUS!

Always FAB seeing ya, Sis! Hope you're having a flawless weekend!

    Thanks for stopping by!

    X ya!

  51. So what's your take on the humble clove of garlic then my friend? If you eat enough of them you can smell it coming through your pores, but they are GOOD for you! haha

Love your quirks Ronnie darling! Hope you had a fab weekend. :)

  52. Hey there Katherine~

"So what's your take on the humble clove of garlic then my friend?"

OMG....I cannot believe you asked me that because I was going to mention garlic in this post, but didn't want the post to be too long.

    I LOVE GARLIC!

And what's really strange is that the intense smell doesn't bother me at all. Now mind you, I don't add a lot of it to my food, however I adore the taste. Hell...I'm Italian, and Italians LIVE off garlic - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear friend. Yes, I had a wonderful weekend. Hope you did too!

P.S. it SNOWED here this weekend - YAAAAAAY!

  53. "My two favorite words were MOTHER and FUCKER."

Bwahahaha! Yeah, I feel you. I'm the same way when it comes to cilantro. Being an avocado fiend I *love* guacamole, but can't stand the cilantro that always seems to accompany it. Darn stuff tastes metallic to me. What's up with that?!

  54. Howdy Herman~

"Yeah, I feel you. I'm the same way when it comes to cilantro. Being an avocado fiend I *love* guacamole, but can't stand the cilantro that always seems to accompany it. Darn stuff tastes metallic to me."

You took the words right out of my mouth, cilantro is ANOTHER thing I find totally ICKY! I can't believe I finally met someone else who does not like cilantro. And you're right, it does taste metallic. But like you I ADORE avocado's, so guacamole is a HUGE favorite of mine!

Thanks so much for stopping by, bud! Hope you enjoyed a great weekend!

X to you, Karin, and Mr. Tyler!

  55. When I was in cooking school and had to do the meat section for weeks, I couldn't touch anything meat related for weeks. The smell would penetrate into my pores and not go away no matter how much I scrubbed. I felt like a giant filet. And, I love meat. I understand your pain.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hey Jen~

"The smell would penetrate into my pores and not go away no matter how much I scrubbed. I felt like a giant filet. "

Yup...it's kinda the way I feel about seafood!

But I would almost rather smell that than ONIONS :(

Thanks for stopping by, my friend!

    Enjoy your week!

  57. "a nice hot bowel of chicken noodle soup."

I really hope you mean BOWL and not bowel. Otherwise, I'd stay away from that particular soup!

And I absolutely LOVE onions. I'm also a big fan of garlic, even though that particular odor lingers on your fingers for approximately TWENTY years!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hey Mark~

"I really hope you mean BOWL and not bowel. Otherwise, I'd stay away from that particular soup!"

HOLY SHIT....thank you for the CORRECTION. I never even caught that!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHA!

Yeah, I had a feeling you LOVED onions (being the wonderful cook you are). Now I DO love garlic myself. REALLY love it!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, buddy! Glad you're back!

  59. OMG, that's soooo funny!!!

Confession: I'm the stinky girl who orders EXTRA onions on sandwiches. If I'm going to be staying home that is. Although, I can remember recently when I did eat lunch before getting a delivery at the house and was trying to chomp on mints real quick as the guys were bringing the things in. Talk about embarrassing. Nothing worse than the smell of onions except maybe the smell of peppermint onion breath. Bleh, I'm grossing myself out. haha

I don't like red onions but scallions, and those Mayan sweet onions are deeeelightful. Again, when home ALONE ONLY!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hey Mary~

"and was trying to chomp on mints real quick as the guys were bringing the things in. Talk about embarrassing. Nothing worse than the smell of onions except maybe the smell of peppermint onion breath."

    HHAHHAHAHHAAHAHA! CRACKED ME UP!!!!

And it's funny you mentioned scallions because I know they're an onion, but to me don't they smell as intense as a red onion. My father use to place a bit of scallion in his homemade chicken noodle soup. It was very delicious!

Thanks oodles for stopping by, my friend!

Nice to see ya blogging again. I miss ya!
