Post updates by email:

Last week, one of my blogging buddies, Jaffer at ManiaRavings, sent me an email with the most PRECIOUS You Tube video, entitled, Riley On Marketing.

“Ron,

I don't know if you have come across this video ... it's spreading wild today on Social Networks.

It's this little girl ranting about choices of toys for boys and toys for girls.

I immediately thought of you as you had written before many times... how you always wanted a Barbie.

I'm in love with this little girl!"

THANK YOU SO MUCH, JAFFER!

As most of my longtime blogging friends know, I ADORE children.

I adore them because they say what they feel without censoring.

They often see things, that we as adults have allowed the world to blind us into viewing through a cloudy lens.

Children view the world through fresh eyes; knowing what’s true and what’s false.

Their hearts are pure. Their minds are clear. Their vision 20/20.

Children have a way of bringing us back to what’s REAL, because they possess the uncanny ability to automatically see the BULLSHIT.

Being around children is probably one of the most amazing blessings we could have, because they give us the gift of SIGHT.

You see…

Some girls like blue stuff. Some boys like pink stuff.

Some girls like super heroes. Some boys like princesses.

And some like a little of both.

We’re all different.

And that’s something to enjoy.

After watching this video at least TEN times and laughing my ass off, I’ve come to the conclusion that Riley needs to be our first lady president. Because if elected, she’ll whip the consciousness of this country into shape in no time.

You ROCK, Riley!

Go, girl!

Please enjoy this short video…..

(make sure your volume is turned up)

  1. Ah .. a girl after my own heart!!

You wouldn't know this, Ron, but when I was young I didn't want the 'pink stuff' either. Of course, being born into a family of boys, to parents who LONGED for a girl, didn't help. I was dressed in frillies whether I liked it or not, and never allowed to play with the 'nasty, rusty' mecchano. One day, my brother and I swapped toys: a baby girl doll for a gun. My parents were livid. Not sure if they were more upset about their daughter playing with a gun, or their son wanting to play with a doll! They made us swap back immediately!

I also wanted their neat, pop button fronted dark blue shirts and their lightweight cotton shorts to play in rather than my full skirted dresses, but apart from a couple of weeks a year on holiday by the sea, no dice.

Interesting, isn't it? And despite their obvious fears, my brother isn't gay, (though I admit I was a bit of a tomboy ... unsurprisingly). So, OK, most girls want the 'pink stuff' and most boys want the 'other colours', but really, it doesn't mean a whole heap of beans, now, does it?

  3. Hi Ronnie,

This one is going to be shared with my fam; Riley, you rock!!!
She said "the companies try and trick you" . Trick you into buying the politically correct gender toy and color... Sharp!
I am all for cross gender toys, but do you think that society is ready? I am thinking that schools are still going to do it in the old fashioned way...

I remember when I was a kid and I wanted to with the Lego set of my best friend's brother. I really wanted to play with it; my friend said something like "he will kill you if you touch it!". Thanks a bunch,girlfriend... hey; they might have stifled a promising career as an architect or designer; who knows??

My parents never gave me Lego; prefering cuddly/ pinky things).

It would be interesting to hear if there are parents among your readers, and what they do with their kids.

    Have a great day, buddy!

  4. Aww that's fabulous. Thank you so much for sharing it. I hadn't even heard of it before. It would be a good idea if we could go back and think like kids. It would be so refreshing, don't you think, to be so unhampered by today's problems, worries and all the other serious stuff. We could do with more Rileys to put us straight. Happy 2nd of Jan, have a great week.

  5. She had it spot-on, didn't she, Ron?!?

As a society we seem to push rather than to allow "boys to be boys and girls to be girls". If we would just raise our children to do what they know is right, to love everyone for who they are, and to follow their dreams, no matter the color those dreams may be, we would be in such a better world!

    Wonderful post!

    Happy Monday,

    XOXO

  6. Isn't that hilarious?? I saw that on TV; not sure what I was watching. She reminds me of my oldest when she was that age - the expressions, hand movements and tone of voice. LOVE IT!

You are so right, Ron. Kids really cut through the bullshit, don't they??

  7. Good morning Bijoux~

Yes...it's freakin' HILARIOUS!!!! Every single time I watch it, I HOWL! I love her little hand gestures and facial expressions. She's ADORABLE!

If you click on the link at the top of this post, it will take you to a few of Riley's other You Tube videos.

This kid is gonna be a movie star, I can tell!!!!

"Kids really cut through the bullshit, don't they??"

You said it! And THAT'S why I love being around them so much!

They give new meaning to: Freedom of speech - HA!

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Have a grrrrreat week!

  8. Good morning Valerie~

" I hadn't even heard of it before."

Me neither, so when Jaffer emailed me this video, I immediately went over to You Tube to check out Riley's other videos. She's faaaaaabulous!

"It would be a good idea if we could go back and think like kids. It would be so refreshing, don't you think, to be so unhampered by today's problems, worries and all the other serious stuff."

AMEN!!!! That's why (even at 56 years old) I try to hold on to that "little child" within me.

"We could do with more Rileys to put us straight."

You said it, dear lady! Rock on, Riley!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, Valerie. Happy 2nd of January!

    Enjoy your week!

  9. Hey there Jay~

"Ah .. a girl after my own heart!!"

    Mine too!

LOVED your story about the doll and the gun!!!!!!! You sounded A LOT like my mother because she too was a tom boy. In fact, she really didn't like all the 'girlie stuff' that girls played with. She was much happier hanging out with the boys in the neighborhood. Even till today, she's more comfortable being with around guys than other girls.

"Not sure if they were more upset about their daughter playing with a gun, or their son wanting to play with a doll! They made us swap back immediately!"

    HAHHAHAHHAHAHA! OMG...how funny!

"Interesting, isn't it? And despite their obvious fears, my brother isn't gay, (though I admit I was a bit of a tomboy ... unsurprisingly)."

Yes, it IS interesting because in one of the comments left on Riley's You Tube profile, one gentlemen said that when he was a little boy, he preferred playing with dolls rather than boys toys, yet he was not gay either.

"So, OK, most girls want the 'pink stuff' and most boys want the 'other colours', but really, it doesn't mean a whole heap of beans, now, does it?"

    No, it doesn't, you're right!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your story on this post, my friend. Muchly enjoyed!

    Have a SUPER week!

    Isn't Riley faaaaaaaaaaabulous????

"She said "the companies try and trick you" . Trick you into buying the politically correct gender toy and color... Sharp!"

    OMG....didn't you LOVE that part????

"I am all for cross gender toys, but do you think that society is ready? I am thinking that schools are still going to do it in the old fashioned way..."

Yes, you're probably right, because it's much SAFER for society to stay with what they feel is more 'comfortable' for them to understand.

"Thanks a bunch,girlfriend... hey; they might have stifled a promising career as an architect or designer; who knows??"

    Bwhahhahahahahahahaha! Hilarious, Barb!

"It would be interesting to hear if there are parents among your readers, and what they do with their kids."

Yes it would. So, I'm anxious to hear what they say.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Barb! Have a GREAT day and week!

  12. Absolutely precious! The big corporations will be fighting to hire this smart little girl.
Kids certainly have a way of putting things in perspective and calling us out on our own stupidity! It seems someone needs to take society down a notch and who better than a bright innocent child; maybe society will stand up and listen.

I remember how when I was a teenager at first my dad wouldn't let me drive his motorcycle because "girls" weren't supposed to like that. Only the boys were supposed to drive motorcycles. Girls were only supposed to ride on the back behind a guy!

HAHHAHAHAHAHA! OMG, how funny! Isn't something how we're taught 'gender roles' at such a young age? And yet today, you see TONS of girls riding motorcycles.

    Ride on, girls!

Thanks for stopping by, dear friend! Happy Monday to ya!

  21. Oh, so sweet - and honest! I have always hated that they start this role separation so early on in a child's life. I loved playing the games that boys played, like making a catapult, playing marbles and skimming stones. I loved playing with a bow and arrows and their guns, especially when it was a cap gun that made a loud bang when you pulled the trigger. I did play with girlie things too, but loved the boys games, possibly more.

    Yes, I was a tomboy ;)

    ReplyDelete
  22. it does seem very limiting, doesn't it? I don't frequent the toy department, but in that video there was a lot of pink overload in the packaging and products. Riley's right - what's up with that? I thought we wanted to help our kids develop imaginative thinking with a variety of products and designs and colors, not limit it to just pink princesses. I'm oversimplifying, but at her young age, Riley is so picking up on the flaws of consumer marketing. Maybe she will grow into a brilliant career in marketing and put an end to these limiting gender stereotypes. Good for her!! Thanks for sharing Ron :)

  23. Just thought I'd mention... although I don't expect you can do anything about it.... I always ask for email notification of comments but the last two or three times nothing has arrived. I haven't done anything different to warrant a lapse by Disqus. It's not the end of the earth since all I have to do is revisit your blog to read the comments, but I wondered if you had an inkling as to why this should be. Glad you liked the funny header on mine, it won't stay, next one might be another funny hehehe.

  24. Oh.my.gosh! Riley is so precious. And boy (no pun) is she ticked at those “companies who try to trick the girls into buying pink stuff! LMAO! She’s right tough! Stupid Marketing Executives, LISTEN to KIDS!

“We’re all different. And that’s something to enjoy.”

Ron, that’s EXACTLY RIGHT! And we SHOULD be different because that’s what makes the world so wonderful! How boring it would be if we were ALL the same! I have a nephew who LOVED Barbie when he was younger. He wanted to be a Skater, just like Ice Skater Barbie! He took gymnastic and figure skating lessons and I praised him because he was SO talented! He also noticed my clothes and shoes.

He told me one day, “Aunt Pam, promise you’ll always wear high-heels.” I said, “I promise, even when I’m ninety!”

Needless to say I’m a bit of a girlie-girl, although I do have my tom-boy moments, like when I shoot my gun…yes I’m a gun-toting-mama and I CAN drive AND park a BIG ASS Dodge Ram 1500—better than some men (no offense guys who can’t park-big-ass-trucks!).

I have so much more to say about this video that I just might have to write my own post!

Thanks for the video, I watched it four times!

  29. Yep, I want to be a girl. One like Riley. A real and straight-forward chick, with kindness but honesty. I like pink. I like girly things. I like boys who like girly things. And boys who like boy things. I like people who like people the very way they are.

I like kindness. I like caring about others. I like being able to be me and to be loved. When I was in elementary school, kids teased me about my utter infatuation for anything pink. Then I decided never to tease anyone. And I never have!

"I have always hated that they start this role separation so early on in a child's life."

Me too! I think it actually stifles a child's individuality and uniqueness.

" I did play with girlie things too, but loved the boys games, possibly more.

    Yes, I was a tomboy ;)"

Yup....so was my mother! She loved hanging out with the boys in her neighborhood. My mom is one of those women who's not a 'frilly girl.' She's very feminine, but she's also not afraid to get her hands dirty.

I totally agree, and no, I don't think you're oversimplifying. Actually, I think you're SPOT ON. To me, stuff like this stifles a child's individuality; placing them in box of gender stereotypes.

"Maybe she will grow into a brilliant career in marketing and put an end to these limiting gender stereotypes."

She NAILED it, didn't she? I died laughing when she said that!!!!

"And we SHOULD be different because that’s what makes the world so wonderful! How boring it would be if we were ALL the same!"

My sentiments exactly! How boring the world would be if we were ALL the same, and did what everyone else did. I admire individuality!

"He told me one day, “Aunt Pam, promise you’ll always wear high-heels.” I said, “I promise, even when I’m ninety!”

Bwhahahhahahahhahha! OMG, Pamela, that made me HOWL!

  53. Talk about hyper verbal. LOL And talk about crabby--once again Moofie demolished my essay. LOL That's okay--you and I both know I go on and on and on and on.

I still think she's cutter than a button. And you GO girl!
We don't go one direction or the other with Bug. She can have any toy she darn well wants.
Well, 'cept guns......cuz.....we don't do guns......

We DO shoot marshmallows! k......I guess that counts as a gun of sorts--you'd have to see the shooter cuz it so doesn't resemble a gun....LOL And it's Nana's shooter....go figure. LOLOL

    We just like TOYS.
    TOYS are good.
......they're required. Ummm.....LOTS of toys. (needed to clarify that!)

Isn't Riley PRICELESS??? Apparently she's been on the news, but since I don't watch TV, I had never heard of her until Jaffer sent this video.
