Since I only have a TV and not cable service, all I can say is…thank god for the Internet and You Tube.

Last week during the hurricane, I spent hours watching episodes of my all-time favorite TV show, The Golden Girls.

To be honest, I’ve never been much of a TV person. The only time I was ever interested was back in ‘80s and ‘90s when the medium of television produced QUALITY shows. Practically everything on TV now is a reality show and quite frankly, I can watch reality every day of the week by just walking out my front door and experiencing life.

For me, television and movies should be a means of taking a break from reality and being entertained, or provoked to think and feel.

With having computers nowadays, you really don’t need a TV because anything you want to watch (movies, television shows, documentaries, news) can be found online. So why even have a television? My computer screen is actually bigger than my TV screen, so it makes viewing things all the better.

Anyway, getting back to the show.

During the '80s, I don’t think there was a sitcom more superbly executed than The Golden Girls.

Okay, perhaps Designing Women too.

The '80s was a decade when TV shows were bringing women to the forefront; showing them as independent and strong.

Not only was The Golden Girls brilliantly written, but the four actresses who portrayed Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia, were stellar!

You can always tell when a TV show is outstanding because you can watch the show 10-15 years later…and it still has the same effect when you watched it for the first time.

Because the situation comedy is timeless.

Allow me to reintroduce the cast of The Golden Girls…

Bea Arthur as Dorothy

Her dry, sarcastic and snarky sense of humor was what glued the show together.

Dorothy was the anchor.

Rue McClanahan as Blanche

Her sexual escapades mixed with her southern accent had me rolling on the floor; HOWLING. She was a combination of a coy Blanche Du Bois and a nymphomaniac.

Betty White as Rose

Her child-like innocence simultaneously made me laugh and caused my heart to melt with such sweet naivety. And what’s ironic is that it takes an intelligent actress to play innocent and naive with believability.

Estelle Getty as Sophia

Her witty and sharp one-liners were probably some of the best dialogue ever written for a sitcom. Sophia was actually my own personal favorite character on the show.

Take a look….

Every once in a blue moon a TV show comes together as if almost by Divine synchronicity. All the stars and planets are aligned, bringing together an ensemble that ROCKS the world; leaving its imprint on your heart forever.

And that, my friends…

…was The Golden Girls.

Wishing you a golden weekend everyone!

  1. I didn't watch much of the show when it aired, but I do remember enjoying Designing Women because I loved the sarcasm of Julia Sugarbaker and Anthony Bouvier! Plus, Hal Holbrook in anything is a gem.

I do agree with you that a truly great show stands the test of time. I can always watch a Seinfeld episode and laugh out loud. But knowing how much you like the Golden Girls makes me think you'd love the Real Housewives of Miami, Ron! Lol....just kidding.......sort of!

  2. I've never watched The Golden Girls, I know I really should remedy that! My Dad, however, was a H.U.G.E. fan. I don't mind certain reality shows - XFactor, Dancing on Ice and Strictly come dancing- mainly the latter two because I love watching dancing and ice skating. I never watch I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here it's just too boring.

  3. Betty White is a national treasure!
you should check out some of 'Hot in Cleveland' on the web, she and the other women are brilliant
Golden Girls is still a go to for me as is Designing Women
I love the basic cable stations that run marathons of these shows all the time

  4. We adored Golden Girls! Sadly, they don't make shows like that anymore. I am sick and tired of all these reality shows. Even the celebrity reality shows are full of 'wannabe's' and 'didn't-quite-make-it' celebrities. There isn't a lot of quality shows on TV now, in my opinion.

  5. Ron, I loved this post! Yes, The Golden Girls was one of my favorite shows too, along with Designing women. I have both sitcoms on DVD. The TV shows today can't even come close to the caliber. My girlfriends and I would sometimes have "The Golden Girls" night when we would all meet up at someone's home with a bottle of wine and some snacks and watch the show.

Sophia was my favorite character too. Loved the clip!

Have a wonderfully golden weekend, Ron.

"but I do remember enjoying Designing Women because I loved the sarcasm of Julia Sugarbaker and Anthony Bouvier! Plus, Hal Holbrook in anything is a gem."

You said it, my friend! Dixie Carter as Julia Sugarbaker was the BOMB! I loved when she would go into one of her brilliant rants and tell someone off. Hilarious! I agree, Hal Holbrook was a gem!

"But knowing how much you like the Golden Girls makes me think you'd love the Real Housewives of Miami, Ron!"

HAHHAHAAHAHAHAHA! I'll give it a look on You Tube, but I doubt it.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by. Have a wonderful weekend!

I think you would LOVE The Golden Girls because the humor is sheer brilliance!

The only reality showed I watched (on DVD) many years ago was "Project Runway" and I enjoyed it because it had to do with the fashion industry. But that's the only one that ever captured my attention.

Thanks for stopping by, m'dear! Have a flawless weekend!

  8. Hey there Lady Dianne~

"Betty White is a national treasure!"

You said, dear lady! A national TREASURE! A friend of mine in Florida got to meet her several times when she came to Disneyworld for an event and said that she was the most down to earth and charming lady. And VERY smart!

"you should check out some of 'Hot in Cleveland' on the web, she and the other women are brilliant"

    Thank you, I will!

Always great to see ya, Di. Have a terrific weekend!

Wasn't the show faaaaaaaaaaabulous?? Truly one of the best sitcoms of the '80s. And yeah, I agree...they don't make shows like that anymore.

    Ditto!

Thanks for stopping by, Babs. Have a super weekend and I hope all is well.

    Oh, how FUN!!!!!!!

It was hard for me to pick a video clip of one of Sophia's one-liners because there were so made great ones to choose from. OMG...I LOVED that little lady!

Thank you for stopping by, girl. Have a wonderfully golden weekend too!

  11. Hey, Ron, thanks for the great post. To be honest, I never watched the Golden Girls, but since you like it so much, it's worth checking out. I seem to remember the show opened with the song "Thank You For Being A Friend" and that would be my message to you, buddy, loud and clear--thank you for being a friend! Have a great weekend!

  12. While The Golden Girls rocked, Designing Women was my favorite! We had some good shows back then.

  13. I was into Miami Vice in the 80s. Loved the innovative use (back then) of music with drama. And yeah, I sort of emulated Don Johnson in my fashion style back then...oh, the shame.

I enjoyed The Golden Girls too, if perhaps not with quite the fervor as you. I agree that Estelle Getty was the best character on the show. And look at Betty White, still going strong all these years later.

As far as quality television these days, allow me to mention just a few shows that are worth investing your time in (and are NOT reality programs):

    1. Breaking Bad
    2. The Walking Dead
    3. Dexter
    4. Grimm
    5. Parks & Recreation

There is actually quite a bit of quality TV out there, if you know where to look. But I watch far less TV these days than I did even a couple of years ago. I'm too busy with my girlfriend!

  14. Hey there Rob~

Knowing your sense of humor through your blog, I think you would really enjoy The Golden Girls. Especially the character of Sophia because she was this tiny Italian fireball with brilliant one-liners about her life in Sicily. She was HILARIOUS! You can find all the episodes on You Tube.

Thanks for stopping by and for your kind comment. Ditto... that YOU for being a friend!

Hope you got your Internet/telephone service restored!

    Have a great weekend, buddy!

  15. Ron, I LOVE the Golden Girls! I didn’t watch the show back
in the 80’s but now I watch it every night before I go to bed. I crack up
almost every night, even when I see the SAME show! Those actresses deserve major kudos and the writers of the show too! We need writers like that today! Good, clean humor! Love it!

One of my favorite episodes is when Rose is upset that she
missed her high school reunion. So the girls go to a high school reunion that isn’t theirs. They pretend to be other people. Rose was the Chinese foreign ex-change student and Sophia pretended to be the Spanish teacher, Mrs. Gonzales. Blanche was the popular girl but no one liked her. Dorothy had me in stitches portraying Cindy Lou Peebles. When Dorothy said she hated the fakeness of high school and reunions and she wanted to leave, it was announced that Cindy Lou Peebles won queen. Dorothy
stops from leaving and yells, “I won! I won!” Sophia said, “This is so sad.”

OMG, Ron, you have to watch that episode. It’s hilarious.

And again, we have something in common! I told you, we were
    separated at birth! ;-)

    Have a “Golden” weekend!

I have to say, I too watched Miami Vice, especially because I was living in Florida at the time. And yes, didn't all us guys have one of those pastel-colored sports coats with a T-shirt underneath back then; emulating Don Johnson???

"And look at Betty White, still going strong all these years later."

Amen! And she's still as smart as a whip!

Thanks for sharing your recommendations of television shows, because I will check them out.

"But I watch far less TV these days than I did even a couple of years ago. I'm too busy with my girlfriend!"

Isn't the clip so damn funny? Whenever I go back and watch the episodes again, I see how brilliant Sophia could say something in so few words and yet, have it be so spot on AND hilarious!

This show touched on many controversial subjects during that time. And some of them were very serious yet, they always did it with humor and sensitivity.

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Have a wonderful weekend!

I loved the clip. LOL Talk about just putting it out there--there wasn't any 'politically correct-ness' to that character! G-d love her--she was hilarious and perfect for the role.

And it IS the weekend......so I can peruse the WWW and discover some of what I missed.

  24. Hi Ronnie,
This is classic gold! I don't know how many times that I just howled in laughter with the gals! Sophia was the live wire of the bunch and I just adored her saucy atttude.
Yup, and I was actually still in the States to enjoy this. I had been out of touch since the 90's because the US sitcoms that I saw before the internet era were only the ones purchased by French TV and "en Français"... US shows dubbed in French( only one channel that I know of has a language option to watch in English).
If I watched TV on the internet, I would never unglue my butt from the chair so, I don't tempt myself!!
Keep on smiling and lots of love down to you and Philly.

  25. so glad your service wasn't interrupted during the storm! I wasn't much of a fan of that broadcast, but my mom was. She always loved Beatrice Arthur. And seeing that photo of Betty White just reminds me what a long career she has had! Her character on the MTM show in the 70s was so over the top. Totally have to agree with you on the insipid reality programs. But there are some awesome programs. You can actually just buy the programs via appleTV / itunes rather than subscribe to HBO. This season we purchased Kelsey Gramer's Boss and it's just awesome. However, you probably need cable to to get to itunes on your tv. duh! ok, well, nevermind. xo!

  26. Oh my, that took me back. I adored The Golden Girls and Bea Arthur in particular. Now that was real humour and not a nasty swear word in sight. I remember when Bea came over here the tickets were a sell-out for her performance. Thanks for sharing this Ron. It was great to recapture a bit of the past.

I rarely watch television. It always seems to dominate, so while Hubs watches I tune in to a programme on the computer or ipad. The smaller the screen the better I like it. I've even watched a movie on the phone and I always watch DVDs on a small DVD player.

Hope you have a brilliant weekend. I shall be dodging the paintbrush!!!

i did get a netflix movie you did a write up on yesterday and will watch it this weekend. what's the name of it? ummm, hold on...somewhere in time.

  29. I know I watched Golden Girls at least a few times, but it was on the years spanning grad school for me (literally - 85-92), so I wasn't watching much TV at all. What I remember most was hoping that when I got old I didn't feel compelled to wear over-sized flowing clothing in pastels and metallics. But I admit, they had some very funny moments.

I've ditched cable entirely, and now all I have is Netflix, which I stream through a DVD player that somehow is connected wirelessly to my internet. It's only about $8 a month, with unlimited viewing and I watch both movies and television series on it. So far, I've worked my way through "Ally McBeal" and "Brothers and Sisters" and "Lie to Me." I'm watching several series now depending on how I feel at the moment - "Law and Order SVU," "Glee, "XFiles," and "Numbers." How's that for variety?

"What I remember most was hoping that when I got old I didn't feel compelled to wear over-sized flowing clothing in pastels and metallics. But I admit, they had some very funny moments."

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA! You are soooooooo right, they DID wear some funky outfits. The only one who wore basic, normal clothing was Betty White as Rose. And on an interview I once saw Betty White in, she said that all her costumes were 'store bought' off the rack, while the other three ladies had their costumes made from a clothing designer. So that's probably why they looked a bit over the top.

"I've ditched cable entirely, and now all I have is Netflix, which I stream through a DVD player that somehow is connected wirelessly to my internet."

You know, I've heard more people say that within the last year and they LOVE it! I may have to look into that because it sound likes something right up my alley!

"You can always tell when a TV show is outstanding because you can watch
the show 10-15 years later…and it still has the same effect when you
watched it for the first time."

Yep - that's our measure of true TV genius, too. And ... well, it's not quite ten years yet, but I'm convinced (I KNOW) that Boston Legal is one of those shows, too. Actually, for me, Star Trek is, too. I don't really count the first series, when it was finding its feet, but from Next Generation on, it is guaranteed to be one show I can put on any time and enjoy. I suppose it will date in time, but I think I'll always love it.

'There must be some homosexuals who date women?'
    'Yeah, they're called LESBIANS!'

I've never seen Boston Legal, but will check it out on You Tube. However, Star Trek, YES! I can remember when that show came on (like in the late '60s?) and everyone being enthralled because it had to do with space travel. And back then, it had VERY high-tech special effects.

    "Beam me up, Scottie!"

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! Yep, and I'm sure there are some people around who are still that naive, too! LOL!"

She's like the Every- Ready Battery Bunny. She just keeps on going and going and going! And she's still as witty and bright as she was back then. I ADORE her and hope she keeps on going for years to come!

Thanks for stopping by, girl. Hope you're having a fantabulous weekend!

" Look how FABULOUS Betty is in that picture!!!"

Yes, doesn't she? Such a pretty lady, and still is!

"... can you imagine watching them do this live, like on stage?!?!"

Funny you said that because I watched a video clip over at You Tube in which the Queen of England invited them over to England to perform a LIVE performance on stage. It was wonderful!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Katherine. Hope you're having a golden weekend!

  53. No doubt about it, The Golden Girls is classic 80's television. But for my money, the best show that I remember watching in the 80's ('tho it was filmed in the late 70's) was Emergency! (wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency!).

Other favorites of my mine from the 80's: The A-Team, CHiPs, Diff'rent Strokes, The Jeffersons, Mork & Mindy, Night Court, and WKRP In Cincinnati. That there's some great television from an era that can never be repeated. Wish I could go back some day ;-)

Loved ALL the shows you mentioned!!! And who would have thought that Robin Williams would end up being such a great dramatic actor as well as comedy?

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Hope you and the family had a fantabuous weekend!

X to you, Karin, and Mr. Tyler!

  56. Hey there Jayne~

Yup, I had a feeling (being a writer yourself) that you really enjoyed the brilliance of this show! Between the actresses and the dialogue, this show ROCKED!

Thanks for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a faaaaabulous week!

  58. Hey Lowell!

Yes, Betty White is the only one left. And she's still going strong!

Their house looked exactly like a Miami house would look. It was a perfect set.

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Hope you're having a super weekend!
