Since I’m forever sharing the beautiful areas of this city, I thought I’d expose you to a different view.

Today I would like to share some photographs and insight about a particular area in Philadelphia.

South Street.

South Street is an east-west street forming the southern border of the Center City neighborhood of Philadelphia and the northern border for the neighborhoods of South Philadelphia.

I honestly have to say that South Street is not a place I frequent in Philly because it primarily caters to tourists and college students, with its T-shirt stores, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs.

It's just one BIG partying area at night.

Yet, South Street has an interesting feel to it because it’s completely different from any other area in Philadelphia, which is primarily known for its stunningly beautiful and grand architecture.

South Street on the other hand, shall I say, is a bit more on the trashy side.

But even in its trashiness, it still has its own unique kind of flair.

That’s one of the things I love about cities (particularly older cities) – because they usually contain strong and blatant elements of beauty and rawness.

Like life. Life can be both beautiful and raw.

So allow me to give you a peek into South Street.

Please enjoy…

A view down South Street from 6th Street.

Woo! Woo! A place to learn pole dance fitness! And just think, being a man, I’ve already got my own POLE. So all I’d have to do is bring it to class and start dancing around it.

*I'm curious to know if this place has a back room where they sell dirty magazines and condoms?

Platform shoes I saw in a store window. Hey, I bet these are the exercise shoes everyone wears at Got Pole.

An old and dilapidated apartment building. I hope the interior looks a little bit better than the EXTERIOR.

Isn’t this cool? A tropical scene painting on the front of a building.

Lorenzo and Sons, a Philadelphia family owned business, which unfortunately closed back in June 2012, due to a fire. However, they have plans of reopening. They had the BEST pizza!

This used to be a store called, Zipperhead (a punk rock boutique), which closed its doors back in 2005.

*Probably because of the LARGE ant infestation.

Thanks so much for taking this little tour down South Street!

Have a marvi Monday everyone!

  1. Interesting shots, Ron, as always. It is a shame that a once elegant area is allowed to sink into dilapidation. Even though attempts are made to brighten things up I find they can never get back to the original. But maybe they don't want to, after all life moves on! The zipper effect and the ants on the last house kind of spooked me... who would want to live or work in a place like that...lol.

I decided to buy a new camera so that I could take decent pictures, but just as I decided the chain of camera shops closed down. Can you credit that. eh? I'm not sure about buying such things on line.

Hope you have a good week. Happy Monday.

  2. That certainly is a different side to the Philly you have shown us previously, still interesting though Ron. I'd like to learn Pole dancing but I think I might fall on my head. LOL

  3. I've never been a huge fan of South Street. There are a few really good restaurants but I usually steered clear of it when we lived there. Loved the colors in those shoes. It is fun to focus on things like that in a photograph. Next time, I think you should stop by Penn for a photo op.

  4. Well that was an enjoyable tour, Ron! You really captured the more gritty side. I'm with Valerie on the ant building. Creepy, because I detest ants, but very cool. I wonder where Lorenzo's head went? And a bit braggy on the pole, Ron, but I guess if you've got it, you can flaunt it!

  5. Great photos, Ron! I feel like got a guided tour without every leaving my desk! I love those great old buildings; they're living pieces of history. And it's great when artists can take a rundown old place and turn it into a giant piece of art. Excellent work, buddy, now go take some pole dancing classes! Take care!

  6. Oh, but what gorgeous architecture. Definitely in need of some TLC, but wow what it must have been in its day!
I appreciate the wander you took--there are places I wander that make people fear for my safety. LOL But I'm a curious soul. And sometimes oblivious to the circumstances around me. Worth the wander. Toting a camera--maybe not so smart in some of those places--but still worth the wander. I've taken some wrong turns in my life that have given me wonderful memories. Took a photo of an awesome rose in Arizona--cuz the mom told the 'bit scary' son I could. LOL Yeah--it was one of those times that I was GLAD to have the camera as an excuse for being where I was.

Excellent photos, sir. I've missed those upclose shots of your world!

  7. Hi Ronnie,
    How are ya, buddy?
Now, do I remember South street? What a compromising question but, Oh Yes I do. Do I like I? No, I don't. We had the bottom end of S St near where we had our b&b during our visit. But, it had restaurants & bars on that side. There was an Irish boutique down on that end that I adore, too.
I remember your post about pole dancing with the Pussy cat doll's music so, be careful of that place, hon! You won't be able to stop yourself on flaming pink platforms :)
I have to admit that S St was interesting for the weird windows and shops. Philly has the best murals- I love 'em!
BTW- The dilapidated building makes me think of my grandparent's old quarter, in Kensington. I did google earth and the address where my Grandad was born is looking just as sad as that one. :(. With newspapered windows, to boot...
Big hugs to you & to Love city.
    xoxo

    Got pole? That's crazy!
The last building is just wild! It should have zipped up (instead of closing up!)to keep out the ant infestation!

  10. Good morning Valerie~

" It is a shame that a once elegant area is allowed to sink into dilapidation. Even though attempts are made to brighten things up I find they can never get back to the original. But maybe they don't want to, after all life moves on!"

I agree. Philly has way of allowing certain areas to just dilapidate. They seem take care in the upkeep of their historical areas/buildings, but there are a lot areas they just let go.

"The zipper effect and the ants on the last house kind of spooked me... who would want to live or work in a place like that...lol."

HAHAHHAHAHHA! I know isn't it SPOOKY????

" I'm not sure about buying such things on line."

I'm exactly the same way. I don't mind doing the research about a camera online, but when I'm ready to purchase, I feel more comfortable going into a store and talking to a live person.

Thanks for stopping by, dear lady. Have grrrrrrreat week!

  12. Hey there Jen~

"I've never been a huge fan of South Street. There are a few really good restaurants but I usually steered clear of it when we lived there."

Ditto! I don't mind the lower part of South Street (down by 2nd Street), but upper and mid are just not appealing to me.

" Loved the colors in those shoes."

    Aren't those shoes WILD???

" Next time, I think you should stop by Penn for a photo op."

I'm about due to visit Penn. I usually try to get there in Fall to capture the colorful leaves along the campus, but this year I just didn't have the time. I may go back at the end of this month.

Thanks for stopping by, girl. Have a faaaaaabulous week!

Yes, Isn't it CRAZY? As soon as I saw it, I CRACKED UP!!!

"The last building is just wild! It should have zipped up (instead of closing up!)to keep out the ant infestation!"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! After the store closed, they moved their location into another store, but it just doesn't have the same impact as the other location did.

Thank you, my friend, glad you enjoyed my crazy tour.

" I'm with Valerie on the ant building. Creepy, because I detest ants, but very cool. I wonder where Lorenzo's head went?"

When I first saw that building, it felt like I was in the movie, "Honey I Shrunk The Kids" because I felt so little standing next to those HUGE ants! And it's that funny about Lorenzo's head? It's GONE.

"And a bit braggy on the pole, Ron, but I guess if you've got it, you can flaunt it!"

Bwhahahahahahaha! No, I swear, I wasn't bragging. I just meant because I'm a man....I've already got my own POLE :)

Yes, as I shared in my comment to Jen, I really like the lower part of South Street (where you were). It's the upper and mid section I'm not very keen on.

"I remember your post about pole dancing with the Pussy cat doll's music so, be careful of that place, hon! You won't be able to stop yourself on flaming pink platforms :)"

Bwhahahahahhahha! OMG...that CRACKED ME UP, Barb!!!

Yes, don't they? And also the mosaics!

"BTW- The dilapidated building makes me think of my grandparent's old quarter, in Kensington. I did google earth and the address where my Grandad was born is looking just as sad as that one."

I know, isn't that sad? Also where my mother grew up (Germantown), is the same way. It's looks like a war zone.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend. Have a great week!

  17. Hiya Mel~

"Oh, but what gorgeous architecture. Definitely in need of some TLC, but wow what it must have been in its day!"

You're right, in its day it was stunning. That area is the first area of Philadelphia that was built, so its the most rundown. It was originally the 'garment district' of the city.

"I appreciate the wander you took--there are places I wander that make people fear for my safety. LOL But I'm a curious soul. And sometimes oblivious to the circumstances around me. Worth the wander. Toting a camera--maybe not so smart in some of those places--but still worth the wander."

I'm with you, Mel, I'm a curious soul (Libra thing perhaps?). I like to go into areas that are not always the most popular areas because there different and unique.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. I will be posting more photos within the month, because now that I'm not working, I have more time to wander the city; snapping photos. Perhaps even NYC!

    Have a super week!

  20. My skin crawls just looking at the ants on the building. I'll admit, it is pretty creative, though. I love old buildings, dilapidated or not. They just have so much character and, one would think, stories to tell.

And ghosts, one would also think.

You should do some paranormal investigating in some of these older buildings, Ron! Now THAT would make for a good blog post.

Oh wow .. well, the first couple of pictures could be any of a number of large cities, including London, but I LOVE the building art!! The ants are gorgeous!!!

I hope someone takes that lovely old building in hand soon. I think it could do with a makeover. Perhaps a tropical rainforest this time (maybe with a greyhound or two and Johnny Depp peeping through the foliage, as Captain Jack!).

    ReplyDelete
  23. "I'm curious to know if this place has a back room where they sell dirty magazines and condoms?" No kidding, I was thinking the same thing, Ron!

These are some really great shots. I'm really drawn to the topical painting on the building. That is just way too cool. And the building with the ants looks like something out of a sci-fi movie!

  24. Hey there Matt~

" The tropical building is great. It would be even better if all the buildings in that street were painted similarly."

I agree! Some of the other buildings on the street are also painted with a mural effect, but there are many that are similar to the old and delapidated one in the photo above. Philadelphia often struggles with itself in the way of improvement. Not only physically, but consciously as well.

    "I love Zipperhead - ants 'n' all!"

  58. A nice assortment of interesting photos!

We've been to South Street quite a few times. Sometimes just to drive down on our way to or from somewhere else in the City, other times we park and walk. One restaurant we like is Brauhaus Schmitz. Mmmm!

We've been to Condom Kingdom too, although I wouldn't say we specifically liked it or purchased anything. We were with friends and one of them wanted to go in. LOL

  59. I do believe i've been to this particular neighborhood. Is the river close by? I do recall it was pretty darned crowded. Thankfully I did not see the large insect covered zipper building. Supersized insects are not my friend! xo, diane

  60. Aw....thanks, Mary :)

Yes, I knew that most likely you've been down to South Street when you and Hubby come to Philly on your visits.

"One restaurant we like is Brauhaus Schmitz. Mmmm!"

Never heard of that place before, but I'll look for it the next time I'm there.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG, I cannot believe you mentioned Condom Kingdom because on the day I took theses photos, I took one of that place too and was going to post it, but the photo came out so blurry.

    Bummer :(

Thanks for stopping by, neighbor! Have a fantastic week!
