When I was a youngster, the two most popular brands of bath bar soap were Zest and Irish Spring.

I can remember how my mother would buy them in those family size 8-packs, which she would store in the hall closet with the bath towels, wash cloths, and toilet paper.

And to this day, I can still recall how each of those soaps smelled.

Zest had a fresh; almost summer breeze at the beach aroma.

Irish Spring had a clean, crisp; almost citrusy-piney aroma. The bar had green and white stripes running through it, which were reminiscent of Ireland I suppose. So whenever I used it, I thought that I would eventually turn into a green leprechaun and start dancing the Irish gig, naked in the shower; covered in soap bubbles.

Also, both of these soaps had such corny TV commercial advertisements that would run through my head every time I bathed.

Then, sometime during the 80’s, bar soap went to wayside while shower gel (body wash) came to the forefront.

And I have to admit, I was a little resistant at first to using body wash, because psychologically, I felt like bar soap was the only thing that would clean my body thoroughly.

But the first thing I noticed when I started using body wash versus bar soap (including Zest), was that it didn’t leave any kind of yucky residue on the shower. Do you know the residue I’m talking about? That white, pasty film that glues itself to the shower tiles and curtain, which can only be removed with 2 tanks of gasoline and a box of stick matches.

Ever since I started using shower gel, I no longer have to deal with that. My shower stays cleaner – and so does my skin. Also, with as many showers as I take in a day, I seem to save more money using body wash instead bar soap because bar soap dissolves so quickly and gets all mushy.

And I have figured out a way to use ONE product instead of two. I simply buy a big bottle of shampoo (for $4.99) and used it for my hair AND body. Viola!....I kill two birds with one stone. And a bottle will last me a month.

Yes, I know, I sound like a CHEAP little leprechaun, don’t I?

Yet, with today’s economy, every dollar counts.

But still, I do miss those cheesy bar soap commercials…

Wishing you a squeaky clean weekend everyone!

  1. You are so funny Ron! Personally, I like Irish Spring...between those two. I much prefer Body Wash. One of the reasons is because I became absolutely addicted to the stuff when I worked at Bath & Body Works. I was pretty obsessed with trying all of the different kinds...and of course we did get a hefty discount which was nice!! Have a Super Squeaky Weekend Ron!! xo Jeanne

  3. Helloooooo Jeanne!

OMG....I just this second finished publishing this post!! You and I are both night owls!

"Personally, I like Irish Spring...between those two."

Hey, to each his own. I just found that once I switched over to body wash, any kind of bar soap left a film on my skin.

"when I worked at Bath & Body Works. I was pretty obsessed with trying all of the different kinds...and of course we did get a hefty discount which was nice!!"

OMG...I LOVE the stuff from Bath & Body Works! I used to use one of their showers and body lotion. Also, loved their candles and room atomizers. And I bet you LOVED having that discount!!!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady. Have a fantabulous weekend!

X to you and the girls!

Keaton and Nicholson are absolutely brilliant in it. And I love the story because it's humorous, touching, and has a wonderful ending.

    GREAT film!

Oh, God, I remember those Irish Spring commercials! They'd always have this backlot "Irishman" doing something so manly that he needed a shower ASAP. And I think Zest used to claim it wasn't really soap, but something...beyond!

Being a manly (half) Irishman, I still use soap, but your idea sounds pretty good. Now whenever I shower I'll have this image of you nakedly dancing the Irish jig in a cloak of soap bubbles!

    Saints preserve us!!

    Have a bubbly-good weekend, buddy!

  6. your childhood home sounds like my present setup, that's exactly where the soap is, all 8 bars: in the closet with the towels. i'll tell you a little something you may not know about me, but just you. everyone else please look away. i used to love soap so much, i would lick it. yeah, i'm nasty, i know. i was an irish spring licker too. i don't do that anymore, i'm a grown arse woman (as cederic the entertainer would say). anyhoo. you're right about that nasty white film soap leaves. i use soap and shower gel. my favorite to use after a soap wash is the original scent of avon's skin so soft. i smell great the entire day and often smell my skin throughout the day. very slippery in the bathtub/shower though.

can't say i blame you for using shampoo. i admire your thriftiness and killing two birds with one stone. if i could wash my hair daily, then yes, it makes sense.

  10. I once said to a co-worker "Sure, I ate a whole bag of candy, but at least I didn’t eat a whole roll of toilet paper" in reference to that show. So any time I eat like a cow, I don't feel as bad because at least I'm not eating TP or licking soap.

  11. Okay....I'm gonna pretend that I DIDN'T read Val's comment--even though I did. Shhhhhhh. *snickering*
Our families musta traded information about where to store the 8 packs of soap--ours was kept in the same place! The whole closet smelled of soap....

And I'm with the JunkDrawer gal--THANKS a whole lot for that Zestfully clean jingle. :-/
If someone asks me HOW that got stuck, I'm going to blame Val licking the soap--you're off the hook, sir! LOLOL Shhhhhh!

I use whatever 'he-who-gifts-me-with-bath-stuff' gifts me with! And it's always smelly gel stuff with smelly lotion to match! OH...but I get THE most awesome bubble baths and the duckies and I love it! We don't get that gunk around the tub that comes with soap. Mr. Bubble taught me a thing or two. OH LORD....*cue the Mr. Bubble jingle!!!*
*sigh* I can TELL it's gonna be a jingle kinda day......
    Yup.....Val's fault! :-/

  12. Here's to a clean and sweet smelling weekend, Ron! I go back and forth between bar soap and body gel...you're right though about the residue. Perhaps I should go back to gel. I went through a phase of using natural glycerin soaps...those cause serious clogs in the drain! It took me a while to figure out it was caking up with hair...yeah, we're a hairy bunch around here, lol!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I use shower gel but MWM uses bar soap, actually Imperial Leather, in the shower. When I used to use bar soap it had to be Pears because I loved the smell and the fact that it was transparent - don't ask me why I just did. I also have liquid soap in a dispenser on the sink in the bathroom as I hate the mess bar soap leaves on the sink. YUK.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I've never heard of Irish Spring, Ron, but I remember Zest. I don't see it in the shops anymore, at least the ones I go to. I've recently swapped back to bar soap because of the amount of foam gathering in the bath. After the main drain flood the plumber recommended that we use less foamy soap. Our drainage system is crummy! So now I use Pears oil-clear with lemon flower extract. It's zesty, but the plus side is that it's the only soap I know that doesn't get mushy and never 'splits'.

    Have a great weekend.

OMG...you are sooooooo right! The glycerin bars are worse than the hard mill bars of soap AND they dissolve so quickly.

I even tried Dr. Bonner's Peppermint Castle bar soap, but it still left a film.

Yes, I do know what you mean because sometimes if I get overzealous with the body wash, I get A LOT of foam as well. However, I've never had it clog the drain.

"So now I use Pears oil-clear with lemon flower extract. It's zesty, but the plus side is that it's the only soap I know that doesn't get mushy and never 'splits'."

  24. Ron, once again you had me laughing at my desk this morning at work! The visual of you standing in the shower and doing the Irish gig, covered in bubbles is hilarious!

I no longer use bar soap as well, and for the reason you said. It leaves such a yucky film on the shower tiles and curtain. I buy a very inexpensive body wash, which I get at the drug store and really like it. But I have to try what you said and use shampoo. Great idea!

  27. Funny you should write this post. I've long argued over the merits of bar soap v. body wash. Body wash is more convenient, and yet, I tend to use soap; I prefer the scent and the cleaning ability. Ironically, guess which two brands of soap I use? Yep - Irish Spring and Zest!

  29. I honestly can't remember what soap we used growing up. Isn't that awful how the memory goes!? LOL Well, I do remember the linen closet at the end of the hall and it having that washed towel, shelf liner, soap smell. :) It very well could have been Irish Spring.
I have tried a few body washes but always seem to go back to soap. Hubby definitely prefers soap too. We don't have any particular favorite. Whatever is on sale. lol We've used Irish Spring, Ivory, one called Cashmere Bouquet and a few others.
I'm not picky about my baths either. If I don't have bubble bath, I squirt a bit of shampoo in while it's filling and ... happy bubbles. ;)

And I cannot believe you mentioned Cashmere Bouquet because my grandmother (my mother's mother) used that too! I think she also used Camay!

Yes, I've seen those combo shampoo/body washes in the store, but have never tried them.

    Exactly.

" I have even used our shower gel to wash dishes and sheets! Smells great!"

OMG....I'v done the same thing myself, when I run out of dish soap.

"Dr Bronners bars and liquid leaves the ickiest film, but I use it when I'm having my sulfate sensitivities."

I TOTALLY agree! I've tried that several times, and for being a 'natural' soap, it's leaves the worst film.

The shampoo I use is from Tresemme. I get it at the drug store and it's awesome. I usually buy the BIG bottle and it lasts me a month.

Ron, I am with you on the body wash! I LOVE IT! I don't know what I did before this great invention to mankind. How do you even use a bar of soap? Do you rub it directly on your body (seems kinda gross), or rub it on the washcloth (awkward and doesn't lather up)? I have no recollection of what I did back in the day!
And thank god for liquid hand soap. I will never forget the time I had a bar of soap slip out of my hand and land straight into the potty when I was a kid! I panicked and..........yes, I flushed it! My poor dad had to take the whole damn toilet off the floor to fix it! He was MAD. We had a number of toilet incidences at our house, and it was just me and my brother causing all this chaos!

Oh, and I once had a childhood friend named 'Dave' who liked to carve into Dove soap, changing the 'o' to an 'a'. Honestly, I hadn't thought about that for little bit of my past for 30+ years. Funny what a blog post will kick up in the brain. Heh...

" To me, soap is soap, so I too use shampoo as body soap. Why purchase two products when one will do?"

Exactly. And being someone who was a licensed cosmetologist, I know that using hair shampoo on your body is much gentler than using bar soap, because it's PH balanced.

" a childhood friend named 'Dave' who liked to carve into Dove soap, changing the 'o' to an 'a'. Honestly, I hadn't thought about that for little bit of my past for 30+ years."

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG...how brilliant!

    Dove - Dave!!!

Thanks for stopping by, buddy. Hope you and the family had a spectacular weekend!

X to you, Karin, and Mr. Tyler!

  51. Ron, I stopped by CVS today and bought the shampoo you said you use. And I have to say that I really like it. Both on my hair and skin. And I love the smell. Clean! Great price too!

  52. AWESOME, Denise!!!! And if you bought the BIG bottle, it should last you at least a month!

  53. I'm trying to catch up, Ron, and this was a hoot (as usual, my friend!).

I, too, initially thought body wash wouldn't clean as well as bar soap, but it does. It also feels and smells nicer! And now that you mention it, the shower DOES stay cleaner longer -- who knew?!

Still, I have to say, somebody came up with a winner in Irish Spring! The green color, the ads -- all memorable, just as ads should be.

  54. Helloooooooooo Debbie!

No worries, dear lady, I know you've been very busy right now. Please feel free to stop by ANYtime.

" And now that you mention it, the shower DOES stay cleaner longer -- who knew?!"

See! It does!!!!! It doesn't leave that YUCKY film like bar soap does.

"Still, I have to say, somebody came up with a winner in Irish Spring! The green color, the ads -- all memorable, just as ads should be."

You're absolutely right. And people STILL used it and LOVE it!

Much thanks for stopping by, Debbie. Hope all is going well with the son's commencement.

  55. Good morning Ronnie,

You really got me chuckling this morning with the vintage commercials. :)
When I think of it, I don't remember what was our brand of soap at home.. a little bit of each of these and others( I remember Ivory). I even remembering bar soap in connection with middle & high school( bringing it for the dreaded PE class showers and once in 7th grade art class for soap carving!).

I even kept the soap habit in France for a long while until I started using body washes. They have some luscious types over here, so I am spoiled! I haven't gone back to soap.

If "doubling up" with your fav shampoo as a bod wash works for you then why not?? We all have our little penny saving habits :)

Big hugs to you, sweets xox

  56. Not sure what possessed me, but I went to YouTube and watched all the EYE-rishhh, spring commehrcials. I used to use 'Caress, before you dress."

I switched back to soap after I lost my shower pouf. I guess it never dawned on me to just go buy a new one!

  57. Bonjour Barb!

OMG....it must be about 6 AM in France. You're up early, but I'm glad because I was just getting ready to log off line, when I saw your comment!

Aren't the TV commercials HILARIOUS? I can still remembering watching them as a kid - HA!

Yes, my mother would sometimes use IVORY as well!!! I remember the commercial for that one too. Oddly though, Ivory soap always dried my skin out, even though it's advertised as gentle.

"They have some luscious types over here, so I am spoiled! I haven't gone back to soap."

YES, I can only imagine how AWESOMELY made the body washes are over there. And I bet they smell HEAVENLY!

Thanks oodles for stopping by this morning, my friend! Wishing you a beautiful week!

    ((((( You )))))

    X to you and D!

  58. Hiya Chrissy Girl!

"Not sure what possessed me, but I went to YouTube and watched all the EYE-rishhh, spring commehrcials."

HAHHAHAHAHAHA! OMG...how FUNNY! Yes, they have a variety that date waaaaaaaaay back and then some that are more recent.

"I switched back to soap after I lost my shower pouf. I guess it never dawned on me to just go buy a new one!"

YES! I use a shower pouf too! Don't ya love them? You're right though, they work so much better with liquid body wash.

Thanks for stopping by, girl. Have a faaaaaaaaaatabulous week!

X to you and the gang!

  59. I am totally team body wash instead of bar soap because it doesn't leave that film on my body or my shower. But I used to LOVE me some Zest soap when I was a little kid!

  60. Hey there Meleah!

Yes, that's probably the main reason why I use body wash instead of soap. Also, it seems to be gentler on my skin.

"But I used to LOVE me some Zest soap when I was a little kid!"

OMG...me too! I can STILL remember the smell!

    ZESTFULLY CLEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, girl. Hope you're feeling better and enjoying your week!

  62. I remember Irish Spring and the "Manly, yes, but I like it, too!" bit. I think my mother always bought Dial soap for us. Which I never really liked. I went through a clear Neutrogena soap phase in college and the Lever soap, which I liked because it was creamy. I eventually discovered olive oil soap, which I LOVE. Olive oil with another scent, like aloe or chamomile. But now I use the liquid version of it in a pump bottle. Actually, in addition to the bottle of olive oil liquid soap, I have a bottle of Neutrogena Rainbath just for its heavenly spicy scent.

(And no, I was supposed to fly to Philadelphia, but the sent me to DC instead.)

  63. Hey there Secret Agent Woman!

" I think my mother always bought Dial soap for us. Which I never really liked."

My cousins, who lived a few houses away from my family used Dial soap as well. Dial soap always reminds me of our summers spent in Wildwood, NJ, because they used to have Dial soap in at the beach showers!

" I eventually discovered olive oil soap, which I LOVE. Olive oil with another scent, like aloe or chamomile."

OMG...I cannot believe you mentioned olive oil soap, because I at one time used that too. I used to get it at Whole Foods. Great soap!

"(And no, I was supposed to fly to Philadelphia, but the sent me to DC instead.)"

Oh shit, sorry, I must have read that wrong.

Thanks for stopping by, girl. Welcome home!

  64. "That white, pasty film that glues itself to the shower tiles and curtain, which can only be removed with 2 tanks of gasoline and a box of stick matches."

That's why I can't get that damn film out of my shower stall! I haven't been using gasoline and match sticks!!

But it's the truth. I abhor cleaning the shower stall. I'd rather clean a thousand toilets. ;)

oh.my.gawsh! Those commercials bring back memories! Or should I say...nightmares! I don't know which one is worse. Probably the Irish Spring. Who the heck carries a bar of soap around? And then tells someone they stink and should use the bar of soap that's in their pocket? And the damn soap "to get a strong man fresh", what about a "weak man"?? Then the silly woman, "I use it too". But it's advertised as the "manly deodorant soap"! The accents are even sillier.

And speaking of accents. I swear the Zest woman had an Irish accent! Or maybe my ears were just bleeding Irish from the first commercial.

    Thanks for the giggles.

Have a fantabulous weekend. Looks like it's gonna be a beautiful one!

Hahahah! Now I have visions of you as a green leprechaun, dancing naked in the shower. Well ... half-visions; my mind is desperately trying to shy away from that! Not because of the 'you' half, but the leprechaun ... well, let's just say my mind is boggling.

We didn't have either of those soaps. We had Camay. It came in pink or white and both smelled exactly the same; kind of 'soapy'. It was the only one my mother trusted for my extremely sensitive and covered-in-eczema skin. Other people had Pears, which I always, always wanted because it smelled so wonderful and was amber-coloured, and transparent, and I thought it looked like a jewel, but Mum said it dried your skin too much, so Camay it was. And I still remember the smell, too!

    This ad is HILARIOUS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWtARx44tk4

  66. Entrepreneur is a soap fan; I'm a body wash girl. So our shower is a hybrid of cleaning products! I'm not sure he has a preference; whatever I buy and put in there is good enough for him. I love Dove products (personal care as well as the chocolate variety!). :-)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm a fan of the combo shampoo/body washes too. Soap is soap is soap (well, detergent is detergent is detergent) I have even used our shower gel to wash dishes and sheets! Smells great!

Dr Bronners bars and liquid leaves the ickiest film, but I use it when I'm having my sulfate sensitivities. Like now, boo. I keep a Mr. Clean magic eraser in the tub, and my son scrubs it out for me while he's "playing" in the shower. Sucker!!

You never told us what your favorite shampoo is!
