I’m one of those people who actually enjoys going underground; riding the subway. And call me weird, but there is something so urbanely intoxicating about how they SMELL. I can’t exactly describe it, but it’s a cross between electrocution and gasoline.

See, I told you I was weird.

And the subway system in NYC is mind-blowing because it’s an intricate maze of tunnels that will take you anywhere you wish to go. The public transportation in this city is awesome because it runs 24/7–365 days a year and is reliable.

Now I normally don't take subways when I go into Manhattan on a day trip because I walk everywhere. And when I say walk, I mean WALK. I can cover anywhere from 80-85 blocks in a day. Yet, the strange thing about it is that I am not even aware I’m walking that far because there is so much to look at I don’t notice the distance.

I have to add here that Val is the perfect NYC traveling companion because she loves to walk as much as I do. And we walk at the same speed – warp.

However on this trip, since we were meeting up with Rob in Lower Manhattan, Val and I took a subway so that we could get there within a certain time.

*By the way, the weather was perfect. No heat. Didn’t even break a sweat.

So down we went to the 28th Street and Broadway subway station and took the R train.

I mentioned to Val that when I lived in NYC back in the ‘70s & ‘80s, the subway cars were dirty, riddled with graffiti, and had NO air-conditioning. Well, look at them now…

When we got off at our stop, we called Rob at his office and then he met us on the street.

And can I just tell you how super it was to finally meet him? As Rob shared in one of his emails to me after we met that day, it’s one thing to know someone online, but to meet them in person is another. I don’t care how many times I meet fellow-bloggers, I still get that same excited feeling. And meeting Rob was no exception. What a grrrreat guy he is!

*waving from Philly*

Hi, Rob!

I will share more about our meeting and what we did at Ground Zero on another post later next week.

After we hung out with Rob, Val and I grabbed some lunch and sat in a park and people-watched, which is a phenomenal experience unto itself.

Then we were off to a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

It’s been YEARS since I did this, so I felt like a first-time virgin.

The Empire State Building
Lady Liberty
Later in the day, we took another subway uptown and got off on Spring Street. I had no idea where the hell we were going, but to my utter delight ended up in Soho.

Soho is an artsy and what was once, a very Bohemian part of Manhattan. The cobblestone streets are lined with old warehouses; containing loft apartments, art galleries, and shops. It used to be cheap to live there, but now it’s VERY expensive. In fact, it’s expensive to find residence in NYC…period.

Chanel Soho - I had to take this shot because I used to work for Chanel.

Rag & Bone - Val spotted a black dress in this store that was beyond sexy.

Le Labo Fragrance Lab - They hand-blend fragrances in this shop; customizing them to your desire. The aroma from this place was so alluring that it drew us in from the street.

Helmut Lang – Clothing Designer. They were renovating his designing studio.

Val and I saw some filming going on in this street. I immediately got all excited; thinking we would spot a movie star or two. But alas, we discovered they were shooting a TV commercial. Buy hey, it was still exciting!

And like they say in the film industry…“That’s a wrap!”

Thanks so much for taking this tour with us everyone. Hope you enjoyed!

Yes, I'm finally back online, so I will be visiting your blogs today...x

  1. Loved the pictures, Ron. They made me feel I was back there. Oh, I wish! When I was over there I longed to go on Brooklyn Bridge. Unfortunately hubs has no head for heights and bridges scare him to death. Your pics compensated somewhat because now I know what it would be like going there. I think it's great that you meet up with blogging friends, erm that Rob looks like a nice guy!

Well, as I have already told you... it is FABULOUS to have you back in the fold again. Have a wonderful day x

  2. GREAT to have you back, Ron! I'm so glad you were able to finally meet up with Rob.

I love your subway tile photo. LOVE those tiles. I would not be able to cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot unless I kept my eyes on my feet! We saw a commercial being filmed there last time too. Everyone had on New Years Eve hats and noisemakers. It was April. Fun to see!

  3. Great to have you back! Yet again you have me jealous that I havent made the drive to NYC. I am thinking a day trip might be in order sooner rather than later! Thanks for all the awesome pictures!

  4. Hey, Ron, it was so great meeting you and Val! And I'm estatic that you're finally back online. Can't tell you how much we all missed you, buddy!

These pictures are beyond fabulous! I'm a lifelong resident of this town, but these photos prove how I can sometimes take this fantastic city for granted!

You and Val should've tried to get a part in that commerical--you're both so adorable!

And btw, "a cross between electrocution and gasoline"?!? That sounds like a new men's cologne!

Great seeing, buddy, and we WILL do it again!

  8. What a lot of GREAT photos!

Now this is one thing we are not similar in. I hate the smell of the underground (subway). It makes me feel a bit nauseous. I travelled on the overground and underground trains every day when I worked in the centre of London, but give me the overground trains any day. Loved those.

Our Soho is a den of iniquity, where all the seedy things go on. Not a place to go walking around at night ;)

  9. Ron, I was so excited to see that you posted today and were back online. One of the girls I work with reads your blog too, so when I told her you were back, she was so happy!

What a wonderful post and what great photographs! Love the ones of Soho, especially the one of the cobblestone street. What a creative angle. And I laughed so hard at your description of how the subways smell. You are so funny!

And cute photo of Elmo! Have a wonderful week, Ron! So glad your back.

  10. Good Morning Valerie!

"When I was over there I longed to go on Brooklyn Bridge. Unfortunately hubs has no head for heights and bridges scare him to death."

Its funny because I'm not really keen on DRIVING over bridges, however, walking over them doesn't seem to bother me. Isn't that weird? Now I will tell you, at one point Val looked DOWN through the cracks of the wooden walkway and said, "Look Ron...you can see all the way down." OMG...and when I looked down, I freaked!!!

Yes, Rob is a really nice guy indeed. Very comfortable and easy to be around and talk with. He's a typical New Yorker, very real, sincere, and as a good heart. And he's a super writer as well!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. I'm so happy to be back online again. And thank you for your email today!

    (((((( You ))))))

Yes, meeting Rob this trip was the biggest highlight! I know you're a fan of his blog, so I wish you had been there as well. Hopefully, one day you and I and Rob WILL meet in the city. Wouldn't that be super???? I would so enjoy seeing NYC with you because I know you love it as well.

"I would not be able to cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot unless I kept my eyes on my feet!"

It's funny you mentioned that because at one point Val and I DID looked down at our feet; not realizing we could actually see through the wooden walkway all the way below. OMG...we freaked!!! HAHAHAHAHA!

"Everyone had on New Years Eve hats and noisemakers. It was April. Fun to see!"

    Isn't NYC crazy wonderful?

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a great week!

"Hey, Ron, it was so great meeting you and Val!"

Ditto, buddy! And I was so upset that I wasn't able to post this post last week because I was so excited to tell everyone about Val and I meeting up with you!

And yes, thank GOD I'm back online. I was having MAJOR withdraws!

" I'm a lifelong resident of this town, but these photos prove how I can sometimes take this fantastic city for granted!"

It's funny because I mentioned something to Val this trip, and said that when I LIVED in NYC, I took it all for granted too. Now, whenever I go back, I realize what a FANTASTIC city it truly is. New York might not be for everyone, but for me, it has a life force that feeds my soul.

I have a friend who lives in Europe and flies internationally for Virgin Airlines. And even she said that out of all the cities she's ever been to (all over the world), NYC will always be her favorite.

"And btw, "a cross between electrocution and gasoline"?!? That sounds like a new men's cologne!"

    Bwhahahahahahahaha! CRACKED ME UP!!!!

Thank you :) I'm so happy I got this new Canon camera. I've been trying new things and really having fun. There is still so much I want to lean.

"Now this is one thing we are not similar in. I hate the smell of the underground (subway). It makes me feel a bit nauseous."

Yes, I can TOTALLY understand because I know people who feel the same way about that smell. Yet, I don't know WHY the hell I love it so much!?!? In fact, the first thing I said to Val when we walked down the stairs was, "OMG...don't you LOVE that smell?" HAHAHAHAHA!

"Our Soho is a den of iniquity, where all the seedy things go on. Not a place to go walking around at night ;)"

Yes! That's exactly how it used to be in NY Soho. It was a place you DID NOT want to go (especially at night) because it was very seedy and rundown. But I cannot believe how they turned that place around and made it into a gorgeous area!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Babs! And also, thank you for stopping by last week. I was so frustrated that I couldn't response to comments.

Much X to you and Mo!

  19. Ron, I felt like I was right there with you and Val -- what a fun trip! It's been years since I visited The City, but I remember parts of it like it was yesterday (especially the Diamond District!!). So much to see, so much to do, so much ENERGY!

I don't what it is, but I LOVE ground level photographs. I also love looking UP photographs as well.

    "And cute photo of Elmo!"

Val actually spotted Elmo attached to that bike, just before we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. Isn't he ADORABLE??? I just HAD to take a picture of him.

Wow, these are some great photos! The BB shots are so cool. Love the one of Lady Liberty. I'm very interested in reading about your time spent at Ground Zero. Can't wait until next week.

When you write about New York, it's like you make it come alive through your own excitement.

  24. I remember very well riding the subways in NYC in 1976 - we were in town for the Bicentennial, and did the usual touristy things (Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, etc.). My mom has a photo of my dad on the subway, and it's horribly dirty and covered in graffiti. Hard to believe how "cleaned up" New York has gotten since then. I almost miss the dinginess of the old Times Square - that feeling of depravity and danger. Now it's almost like walking around in Disneyland.

Glad you guys had a nice visit and a good time in the city!

    ReplyDelete
  25. it's a cross between electrocution and gasoline. Umm, yes....you're weird. :-) The subways certainly look nicer than how I remember them from decades ago when I visited NYC. I must admit, I'm not a fan. But if I lived there, they'd probably be preferable to the alternative! LOVE the artsy, angled shot of the Brooklyn Bridge looking straight up. Fantastic! And Lady Liberty always gives me chills when I see her. Great photos. Thanks for sharing. Hope your week is going well.

"I'm very interested in reading about your time spent at Ground Zero. Can't wait until next week."

Yes, I will be sharing about that probably next Friday. I wanted to save that experience for a separate post.

"When you write about New York, it's like you make it come alive through your own excitement."

It's because I adore that city. Whenever I come back, I feel recharged with life force.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Matt. Hope you're having a most excellent week!

"I must admit, I'm not a fan. But if I lived there, they'd probably be preferable to the alternative!"

I know what you mean because we have a subway system here in Philly as well, and many people feel the same way. They're not a fan.

" And Lady Liberty always gives me chills when I see her."

OMG...I can't believe you said that because I feel the same way. I too get CHILLS when I see her. To think of how long she has been standing there and what she represents, is so emotional.

I TOTALLY agree! When I lived there, Times Square was Times Square. Now...it's DISNEYLAND.

NYC has most definitely changed in appearance since then. But what it still has is a MAGICAL energy that I don't think will ever change. You can feel it when your feet touch the ground.

The photo of Rob, Val and you just reeks of happiness. You can see it in your faces. All the shots on the Brooklyn Bridge are exciting. Love the view of The Empire State Building through the wires. And Soho looks like an amazing area!

I think if I were to ever visit New York City, I would want to see it on foot as well. From what you've shared, it seems like a place you would want to take in every detail.

"The photo of Rob, Val and you just reeks of happiness. You can see it in your faces."'

Oh, and we WERE so happy. Like three giddy kids! There is something so wonderful about meeting bloggers in person!!!

I was utterly amazed at the change in Soho. Like I shared, at one time is was very cheap to live there because no one wanted to live there. But now, it's a HOT spot. I love all the little cafes and shops that are privately owned. So cool!

Yes, I think if you were to visit NY (especially as a first time visitor) the best way to see it would be on foot. When I go, I usually take one section (lower, mid, or upper) and hang out for the day.

Thanks for stopping by, buddy! Hope your week so far has been awesome!

Yes!!!!! Do you remember that? In fact, YOU were the first blogger I met offline...and what an AWESOME experience that was. The wonderful thing about blogging with someone for awhile and then meeting them in person, is that you already have a kinship with them before you ever meet. And then meeting them is like you already know them on a deeper level.

  37. Wow. That was an orgy of pictures....and it made for an awesome ride! Felt like I was tagging along with you guys. You've shown me sides of New York that I've never seen before. That view of the Brooklyn Bridge is rather famous. At least I've seen that bridge before, so I didn't feel completely lost! And I can't imagine how difficult it must be to bike on those cobblestones! On the Tour de France part of the course ran along cobblestone streets very much like the one in your pic, and more than a few guys fell down in some of the more sketchier spots.

Anyway, great pics! I'm going to scroll through them one more time :-)

As you shared, the Brooklyn Bridge is rather famous (especially in a lot of Woody Allen films. I had been YEARS since I walked across to Brooklyn, so I felt like a tourist!

"On the Tour de France part of the course ran along cobblestone streets very much like the one in your pic, and more than a few guys fell down in some of the more sketchier spots."

Holy cow...I can't imagine what it must have been like to ride a bike across a cobblestone street because it's hard enough to WALK over it. I bet that was ONE bumpy ride!

Ohh...but Soho transitioned well....or is that another 'nuh uh!!..' Elmo on a bicycle, I buy. LOL
The photos are lovely. Taken with the new camera? I'da been toting both, just so I could be confident in something turning out...but these turned out really well. Meeee too! We have to try going back when the fallish weather hits - like Sept or Oct.

Yes, I am soooo happy I finally got back online. It only took WEEK!! God, did I miss it!

Thanks for stopping by, girl! And thanks again for a super fun trip!

  52. The underground (subway) system in London is great too, but I have no sense of direction at all so wouldn't attempt to traverse it on my own. Luckily, MWM seems to have a built-in gyroscope and can find his way around anywhere so I'm safe with him! I love your photos Ron.

  53. Yes, I've heard that the subway system (the Tube) is awesome!

Bwhahahahha! OMG...how funny! Like you, I have NO sense of direction. In fact, I actually have to THINK right or left!

  54. '... a cross between electrocution and gasoline'.. Bwahaha!

How cool is it that you got to travel around NYC with Val AND meet Rob. OMG... awesome! What a beautiful photo of the three of you.
Of course, the other photos are FABulous, too!! We have only been to NY a few times.. once was in Washington Square Park for a festival. Isn't that near Soho?

So when I eventually get over to Philly for our 'Day O' Fun'... hehe.. there will be little to no power walking, k?? LOL Hanging out in the park, maybe feeding a few squirrels...yes. Coffee and soy cocoa at B & N's cafe, sure. And anything or anywhere else that is close by, definitely... but, stroll is how I roll. ;)

  55. Hiya Mary!!!!

Yes, it was sooooo COOL meeting up with Rob and Val. I always get so excited before and during a meet up with fellow-bloggers.

And one of these days YOU and I have to meet, okay?

HAHAHHAHAHA! Yes, I promise...NO POWER WALKING, just strolling. I can stroll in Philly, but in NYC I have to power walk. It's the energy there that does it to me - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by and reading and commenting on my posts, my friend. You're a sweetheart!

    (((((( You ))))))
