Besides the beautiful architecture, another thing I enjoy about Philadelphia is that there are a lot of green spaces.

Because even though I'm a true city boy, I also need interludes within nature. So anytime I have the opportunity to take a walk through one of our many parks, on my way to the grocery store or on my days off, I will. I even enjoy spending time in our parks during the winter months; hanging out with our adorably fuzzy, city squirrels.

City squirrels are fabulous because they're very people-friendly and ballsy, so they don't run away when you stop to talk to them or take their picture.

In fact, they'll even strike a pose and smile for you...

I'm also fond of hanging out with our park trees because I think trees have a special healing ability.

Whenever I feel out of sorts, either physically or mentally, I will sit under a tree for about an hour and believe it or not, I feel a million times better. I feel more centered, calm, and strong.

And yes, don't laugh, but I've even been known to HUG a tree!

And Mark, you understand, don't you? Because you live in the Tree Hugging State of America.

But all kidding aside, I really do love trees and think they add such amazing beauty and purpose to this earth.

Anyway, Monday afternoon I was walking out of Barnes and Noble Bookstore on 18th Street and Walnut, when I suddenly caught sight of white signs hanging off some of the tree branches in Rittenhouse Square Park, so I crossed the street and began reading them. I discovered that they were called love notes and placed there by the organization, TreePhilly.

When I got home, I went online to further investigate more about this organization and found out that TreePhilly is a new greening initiative led by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, that directly engages all Philadelphians in improving their communities by planting and maintaining trees and enabling others to do the same.

Now here's the really cool part. TreePhilly gives away trees twice a year for FREE. And they even help you select a tree; learn how to plant and care for your tree; they even supply you with mulch.

How AWESOME is that?

I'll tell you, I was tickled green when I read about this organization so I had to post about it today.

Yay.... TreePhilly!

I would like to conclude this post by sharing some of the love notes I saw hanging off the tree branches on Monday.

These love note speech bubbles are so cleverly cute!

Here, take a look...

So if you have some time this weekend, step outside and hug a tree.

Like me...
Have a FAB weekend everyone!

  1. I love the Love Notes! What a fantastic idea. They should have kids do that at their schools for Earth Day. Nothing wrong with hugging a tree. I have a picture of myself trying to hug a redwood in California.

  2. I live in the woods so you know I love trees. I love 'em more than grass.

The Philly initiative is just great and the signs are plenty cute. I chuckled a little at the picture of you hugging the tree. Not that I haven't thought of doing the same.

  3. I love trees, too. After reading your post, Ron, I now know why I feel at peace in my garden, where we are totally surrounded by trees. They not only bring beauty to the planet they also help keep it alive. I dread to think where we would be without our beloved trees.

Nice one, Ron, as always xx

  5. What a great idea, Ron! Too many people take nature for granted, so any program that encourages the love and nurturing of trees sounds fabulous to me!

I love how you use trees as a way to heal. I need to try that!

Are you going to get your own tree? You can call it Ronnie Jr. and give us regular updates on its growth. And then you can invite your squirrel friends to come over and hide their nuts!

Great post, buddy! Have a tree-hugging weekend!

  6. Oh Ron, those love notes are so adorable and I laughed out loud at the picture of the squirrel. You are hysterical!

What a wonderful idea from this organization, which is something every state needs to do! Trees are amazing things, and as you said, they have a purpose on this earth so we need to stop cutting them down to build more buildings and treat them with respect.

Great post, Ron, as usual! Have a wonderful weekend and keep hugging those trees x

OMG...how AWESOME! My mother's brother used to live in California and sent us photographs of the redwood forest he and his family visited, and I couldn't get over how HUGE those trees are. HUGE!!!!

This is the first year Philadelphia ever did this and I was impressed and happy about it.

", I now know why I feel at peace in my garden, where we are totally surrounded by trees. They not only bring beauty to the planet they also help keep it alive."

Exactly! And it saddens me sometimes to watch how they cut trees down (and trees that have been here for such a long time), to make room for more construction.

" I dread to think where we would be without our beloved trees."

    Amen!

Honestly, I receive such tremendous healing from trees. It's amazing how much better I feel when I spend time hanging out in the park, under a tree.

"Are you going to get your own tree? You can call it Ronnie Jr. and give us regular updates on its growth."

HA! OMG...I love that....Ronnie Jr. No, unfortunately I won't be getting my own tree because I don't have a place to plant it, being in high-rise apartment building.

  16. Yes, I get it for that exact reason. There may actually be more trees around here than people. And that's a good thing!

I'm all for greening. Except when it refers to the process of leftovers turning moldy in the fridge. That type I could do without! Good for Philadelphia for their new tree planting movement! I think more big cities could benefit from the addition of a leafy green oasis or three.

  17. Good to know there are still Johnny Appleseeds in the world! This sounds like a wonderful organization! Our youngest received a free pine tree when she was 8 years old. We planted it and it's a huge tree in our yard now. It's awesome and our grandkids climb it now! We have lots of squirrels in our yard....they love to terrorize Tanner by running from branch to branch, just out of his reach. :-) Hope you have a wonderfully nature-filled weekend!

  18. Ron, when my son was little, I remember him, too, hugging trees!

What a neat initiative -- giving away free trees with instructions on their care and maintenance. I hope you'll stand in line to get one (and maybe plant it in that park?!)

I know what you mean about trees being so majestic and nurturing. Yes, I agree being around trees offers centering and healing -- now, if Spring will only get here SOON so they can leaf out and we can enjoy their greenness!!

    Happy Friday. . .Happy Weekend!

"We have lots of squirrels in our yard....they love to terrorize Tanner by running from branch to branch, just out of his reach. :-)"

Oh how funny! Lisa, the city squirrels are hysterical because they literally have NO fear of people. They will often just RUN up to me while I'm walking through a park and stand on their hind legs; asking for food, I kid you not. They are sooooooo CUTE!

  22. Hey there Debbie!

"Ron, when my son was little, I remember him, too, hugging trees!"

Oh...how CUTE! That's what I love about kids because they seem more in tuned with things like trees and nature, and will just run up to a tree and HUG it because they can just feel the energy from a tree.

"What a neat initiative -- giving away free trees with instructions on their care and maintenance. I hope you'll stand in line to get one (and maybe plant it in that park?!)"

Isn't it the COOLEST idea? And I think it's REALLY cool that they're GIVING them to people. No, I don't think I'll be getting one myself because I have nowhere to plant it, and I don't think I'd be able to plant it in one of our city parks without permission. But hey, that's a THOUGHT, though. I'll have to look into that.

"about trees being so majestic and nurturing. Yes, I agree being around trees offers centering and healing --"

All my life I've been very drawn to trees and they ability to heal. Trees have a very special 'energy.'

  25. Ron, the picture and speech bubble of Mr. Squirrel is hysterical! And I could so envision a city, street smart squirrel saying that! That's why I love squirrels, they have no fear. I know that many people don't care for squirrels because they can be very aggressive with food, but still, they are the cutest things!

What a wonderful idea this organization came up with for your city. And I think it's something that should be done all over. Not only for trees, but all of nature. Nature gives us so much, so we should give back!

" I know that many people don't care for squirrels because they can be very aggressive with food, but still, they are the cutest things!"

Yes, they can be aggressive with food and quite inquisitive with getting into things they shouldn't, but I agree..they are just sooooooo darn CUTE! And if I could have one as a pet, I would!

"Nature gives us so much, so we should give back!"

Amen, Robert! And it's so nice to especially see something like this being done in a city because cities can be very careless about knocking trees down and then erecting buildings.

  30. I often tell people (in my home state of Alabama) that I have never been camping or fishing or hunting or any of the other outdoor activities that people "in my neck of the woods" (as they say in Alabama) take for granted. Killing animals for sport never had any appeal for me, although I was always happy to eat fish or game that someone else had taken (well, depending on how it was cooked, etc. - so I guess I was a bit of a hypocrite. And as for camping: well, there never seemed to be much point, seeing as how my childhood home was literally in the middle of a forest. I could hug a tree as readily as I could hug one of my parents. It wasn't until I moved to "the big city": places like Birmingham and Mobile - when I realized how much I had taken trees for granted. I'm glad to see initiatives like this, because I feel that - just as there are many people like me, "country folk" - who take trees for granted, there are also plenty of "city folk" who don't know what they are missing!

    Keep hugging those trees, Ron!

  31. Nathaniel, once again buddy, I so enjoy reading your comments because you share so much GREAT stuff!

And you are so right about that!

It's funny because as much as am a 'city boy', I feel just as comfortable and happy spending time outside the city, in the country. Several years ago, I actually spent a week in the Pocono Mountains on a retreat and had the time of my life.

I adore nature, so it's very important for me to have time in our city parks. I always feel so much better after spending the afternoon under a tree!

  55. Notes on trees... that is awesome!!!!

I laughed at what the squirrel was saying. It never occurred to me that New York squirrels were really New York squirrels!!! HA HA HA!

I remember being in Silver Springs in FL and the squirrels were so tame they came and ate out of your hand... it was so cool!

I LOVE trees... in the winter I go hiking in the forests around here to get out and be around nature... I go stir crazy if I don't!

  56. Aren't they AWESOME, Katherine! I was dying laughing from cuteness when I read them!

"I laughed at what the squirrel was saying. It never occurred to me that New York squirrels were really New York squirrels!!! HA HA HA!"

Yes...they're SOOOOOOO NY! And that's why I LOVE them!

"I remember being in Silver Springs in FL and the squirrels were so tame they came and ate out of your hand... it was so cool!"

Yup...they do the same thing here. They will actually JUMP on the bench that I'm sitting on and come real close to me. I've even hand-fed them peanuts!

Aren't trees the best? And I love that we have so many beautiful parks here in Philly to enjoy them.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Hope you're feeling better!

  57. Hey there David!

"Many years ago when my wife and I divorced the first thing I thought was "I have to find someone, I can't be alone!"

Yes, I thought the same thing after my breakup with my first partner. Yet, I realized that that's exactly what I needed because I had never formed a relationship with myself. I was very young at that time, so all my attention and love went into him, not myself. I had to learn that I could be single, love myself, and not feel alone.

"I have been single for 20 years and I never want another live in relationship!"

It's been about 25 years for me, and I feel the same way.

Much thanks for stopping by, buddy. Have a super weekend!

  58. Such a beautiful, heartfelt post, Ron! You have to love yourself before you can truly love someone else.

You're so right about being in a relationship and still feeling alone and unloved. Robin Williams spoke about this very thing: "I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel all alone.”

I joked to a friend the other day that I had to get Valentine cards for all the women in my life--my aunt, my sister, and my two nieces.

And you know something? I love them with all my heart and I thank God for bringing them into my life. I am truly blessed to have them.

So I am going to take your advice and reflect on the love in my life and celebrate it!

Thanks so much for the great post, buddy! And Happy Love Reflection Day!

  61. We're lucky to have a lot of beautiful countryside around here and trees are always an important element in giving structure to the landscape.
    Can't read the words "Parks and Recreation" without thinking of the brilliant tv show of the same name. That's one series that is international in its appeal I think. But it seems the real thing is slightly more efficient. ;~}

  63. First off I have to say I LOVE those notes. I laughed out loud with the "I like big trunks" one. This is really a great organization I wonder if it is something we could initiate in MA. Its so sad to see all of the trees being torn down for new construction an organization like this might be just what we need.
