Post updates by email:

Hello again, folks!

I hope you all had a super last week and that this post finds you well and enjoying the month of September so far.

Holy shit, where did this past week go?  For me it seemed to fly by. I will most likely share more about how my training went in a future post, but I will tell you now that it went well. However, by the end of the second day my brain was fried from SO MUCH information. And I’m very glad that I took a week to primarily focus on my job and leave time for some R&R because I worked a lot of extra hours, so it was a delight to come home at night and just decompress with a nice hot shower, dinner, a movie, and a glass of red wine. Yet, it felt so strange to not hop online and blog as I usually do.

Wednesday, when I sat down to write a post for today, it suddenly dawned on me that I would be publishing it on almost the exact date (Sept. 13th) that this blog was born, in 2007.

And talk about time flying by! I can hardly believe that seven years have passed since I wrote my very first post here, because it seems like yesterday when I hit that publish button for the first time.

I don’t know about you but when I began this blog, I had no idea what I was doing or what I would exactly write about or even how far it would take me. Not to mention that only a year and a half before, I had just gotten online (using dial-up service), so I was a virgin when it came to the Internet. Hell, I didn't even know how to send an email when I first got online.

Throughout these seven years this blog has gone through so many changes. And I finally came to the conclusion that that’s what a blog is supposed to do…change as we change. When I look back on where this blog started to where it’s traveled over the years, I can see that the topics have reflected where I was at a particular time in my life and what my thoughts, feelings, and interests were.

It’s odd, because you start a blog believing that you can direct where it’s going. But then you realize that the blog takes on a life of its own and directs you where it wants to go.

And I think that’s what blogging has taught me the most. It’s a metaphor. Life is not meant to stand still, it’s meant to move forward, just like a blog does with its post updates. And like life, a blog goes down unexpected paths.

This blog has been a space where I have grown not only in my desire to become a better writer, but also my desire to become a better communicator. It’s taught me so much about how to express my thoughts and feelings, and do it in a way that is open, honest, and conscious. And amazingly enough, it’s made me a better communicator in my life offline.

Blogging has taught me to ‘pause’ before I speak, instead of just blurting it out as I’m naturally prone to do.

It has taught me to speak with awareness.

Yes, blogging has been a valuable tool in my life because it’s taught me more than I ever thought it would.

But above all, blogging has allowed me to meet people, such as yourselves, that I probably would have never met otherwise. It’s been a quality, online social media that has connected me to your lives, which I feel very fortunate and blessed to have met you.

Thank you for sharing your interests, your talents, your births, your deaths, your ups, your downs, and everything in between. And even though some of us have not met in person, I feel as though I know you. And I mean really know you, because I can feel you through the energy of your words.

Thank you so much for being part of this community.

You are loved, valued, and greatly appreciated.

*Note: Please feel free to cut yourself a piece of this birthday cake. I baked it myself. It’s a dark chocolate cake with a milk chocolate icing. And no, it's not organic, vegan or gluten-free. Sorry. It's just a good old-fashioned unhealthy cake that I got from Betty Crocker.

Bon appétit!

Have a super weekend everyone!
X

  1. Thanks for the cake. Well, you did have a busy week and it sounds as if it was successful. I just hope you had some YOU time as well. I agree about the blogging, it does reflect our lives even if we don't realise it. I went back and read some of the stuff I wrote when I started in 2009... even my thinking seemed different. I seemed to have a lot more enthusiasm in those days. I admit to having been a bit lethargic about it lately but I guess the pressure at home has something to do with that. Anyway, it's good to see you back, my friend, and I look forward to hearing ALL about your experiences the past week.

  2. Happy Birthday! You are six months older than me! It is fun to go back and look at old posts. What surprises me the most is the change in readership that occurs. It's kind of sad, and makes me miss the 'old timers' who left blogging.

Wishing you a sweet weekend, Ron!

  3. Happy Blogiversary! I have also loved how blogging has changed me and how my blog has changed over the years (since May, 2006). And I so agree that the best part of all s the community that forms. It's such an amazing feeling of support and love, I find. Like amassing your own personal cheerleading squad, spread out al over the place.

  4. HAPPY BLOG BIRTHDAY!!!!!! I tried climbing up to the tippy top of the bridge with about 500 balloons in hand, sparkly with lots of streamers, all ready to tie them on for your viewing pleasure... and then the pesky Port Authority showed up and that whole idea got shot to shit.
Hmm... could you recommend a good product to get this fingerprint ink off?? Something natural, but deep cleansing, with a hint of patchouli?

Hey, I scanned back thru some of the archives and found my first comment:

"Hello new blog buddy... I am visiting from Rhea but could just as well be here via Jeff too.
We have a Vizsla, a Rhodesian/Lab mix and a horrid little cat named Greta. Regreta I call her. Next time I will have to reconsider the whole rescue concept. LOL Actually, I have ALWAYS loved cats but this one is not.so.nice.
Did I read somewhere in your blog that you know astrology?? Please say yes! LOL
I cannot visit your delicious blog for too long today but will be back to stalk you sometime soon.
    Have a great weekend!
    Peace, Mary"

That was from April of 2008
    Obviously, the stalking continues...

  5. Happy Blog Birthday!! I love seeing these posts because it really does show how much blogging can touch our lives! I know when I tell people that I blog that look at me with that strange look like "you are one of them." But honestly I do not know what I would do without my blogging buddies! I only hope that I make time to meet all of you at least once in my life!

  6. Ron, happy 7th blog birthday! I love your blog and am so happy that I found it. Not only do you have such a great way of making all of us feel included, but I enjoy everything that you post about because you share on so many different topics. Yours is a blog I always look forward to reading each time you post. And I miss you when you take a break. As you already know, I don't have a blog so I can't imagine keeping it going for 7 years.

I'm so glad to hear that your training went well. I was thinking about you this week.

Wishing you another 7 years of blogging. Have a wonderful weekend x

P.S. Thank you for the piece of cake. It was delicious!

  7. Good morning Valerie!

Glad you enjoyed the cake. I baked it last night - HA!

" Well, you did have a busy week and it sounds as if it was successful. I just hope you had some YOU time as well."

Yes, I did. I spent my evenings just chilling and relaxing. I was also able to catch up with some friends.

"I went back and read some of the stuff I wrote when I started in 2009... even my thinking seemed different."

That's exactly what I did last week too, I went back and read several posts in my archives and could actually feel what I felt like back then. I also read many of the comments and dialogue with my readers. Some are still blogging, some are not.

"I seemed to have a lot more enthusiasm in those days. I admit to having been a bit lethargic about it lately but I guess the pressure at home has something to do with that."

And that's totally understandable because as I shared, a blog reflects whats going on in our lives. You've been through a lot these past months, with Joes' health, therefore you haven't had as much time to blog. But just know that whenever you post I will be there.

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a lovely weekend!

    X to you and Joe!

"You are six months older than me!"

OMG...you're kidding? I don't think I knew that. Happy Pre-Seven Year Birthday! I remember first meeting you through Jimmy's blog years ago and am so happy that we connected.

"What surprises me the most is the change in readership that occurs. It's kind of sad, and makes me miss the 'old timers' who left blogging."

Me as well. I miss the 'old timers' who left blogging because you really feel a loss when it happens. It's like missing an old friend.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a SUPER weekend!

" I have also loved how blogging has changed me and how my blog has changed over the years (since May, 2006)"

WOW...you started your blog in 2006!?! I don't think I knew that. That's awesome! I had a blog on WordPress in 2006, but only kept it going for a year. Then, in 2007 I started this one.

" And I so agree that the best part of all s the community that forms. It's such an amazing feeling of support and love, I find. Like amassing your own personal cheerleading squad, spread out al over the place."

LOVE how you said that. And I TOTALLY agree! I don't think people who don't blog understand that. The relationships I have formed through blogging have been as true and real as the ones I've formed offline; many of which I have met in person and still have as friends.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a super weekend!

Yes! Yes! Yes! I TOTALLY remember your comment the first time you stopped by and mentioning ASTROLOGY! I also remember seeing your comments on Jeff's blog. You are one of the people I first met when I started this blog and am so happy to STILL be blogging with you!

Thanks so much for stopping by, neighbor! And thank you for still being here. Have a faaaaaaaabulous weekend!

  12. Happy Blog Birthday, Brother! Congratulations on reaching this milestone! You make such great observations in this post, Ron.

"...the blog takes on a life of its own and directs you where it wants to go!"

Oh, how true! I cringe when I look at some of my early posts, but, honestly, you have to start somewhere. And I think it's great that your blogging experience has carried over into your everyday life.

But of course, the best thing about blogging is meeting other people. I am so glad that I have met you and so many great people through you! This has been has been such a fantastic experience for me, and so I wish you many, many more blog birthdays!

Have a great weekend, buddy, take care, and keep on blogging!

Yes, it's the same with me. Many people I know find it hard to understand how we can form real friendships through blogging. Yet, I have met many of the people I blog with in person, and upon meeting them it feels as though I'm meeting an old friend.

"I only hope that I make time to meet all of you at least once in my life!"

" As you already know, I don't have a blog so I can't imagine keeping it going for 7 years."

I honestly can't believe I've kept this blog going for seven years myself. Yet, it's been a JOY. As I shared, when I first started blogging I didn't know what I was doing or how long I would be doing it. The thing with blogging is that it changes, so I think if you change with it, it keeps going.

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Have a faaaaaaabulous weekend!

I think you already know how much I enjoy coming here and reading your posts. You make me laugh, think and inspire. You also have a great group of readers who enjoy communicating through comments. I read a lot of blogs, but none of them have the warm sense of community that yours does. Most of them don't even respond to comments, so I think that's what makes your blog so special. You talk with your readers.

Happy blog birthday, dude! I look forward to reading more in the future.

  19. I'm glad to have shared at least 4 years of your journey with you. My blog will be turning 5 this year, and like you, the focus has shifted in response to the changes that have taken place in my life - many of which I never would have guessed would occur when I first started writing on WordPress. Ironically, my blog started as a respite from my other, "real" blog. Funny how life turns out sometimes.

  29. Happy Birthday! I'm glad you made it through the terrible twos. I was just looking at my Feedly reading list and can't believe how many bloggers (including myself) haven't cranked out a post in a while. A lot of bloggers have migrated to Facebook. You're right, so much has changed in the blogging world because a lot of bloggers have migrated to Facebook. But for me, blogging just seems more of a deeper way to communicate and socialize online. I know it takes more time to blog, but I would rather use my online time to do that than just post a picture with a few words.

  37. Ron, you started this blog using an anonymous name? I'm curious, what name did you use?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Matt!

Yes, when I first started this blog I had a completely different title and blog theme. I called it, Ventriloquist, with the tagline "throwing my voice." The theme was designed like a ventriloquists' puppet, and the anonymous name I used was, "voicebox."

I didn't have that for very long, when I changed the name to "Vent", with the tagline, "a series of takes." That blog had more of a movie/film theme. It was at that point I decided to just use my own name.

  39. Ron, it was so interesting to hear how this blog first started and where it's come. Ventriloquist to Vent to Being Ron.

  50. Aw, thank you, Debbie, I've missed you too and am glad to be back blogging again.

"You've been at this way longer than I have, but I, too, can see the changes in my blog. And in my comments!"

Yes, the media of blogging has changed so much over the past two years. And read a lot on several professional blogs that read. The other social media's are taking over blogging because they're a faster way to socialize online. But for me, blogging will always be my personal favorite.

"Why, even though I haven't met you, I feel like I'd recognize you anywhere..."

And you as well. It's amazing how you can actually feel a person through the energy of their words, isn't it? Many times upon meeting a fellow blogger in person, they are exactly how I thought they would be. It's like meeting an old friend.

  51. Happy Birthday, Ron! And welcome back! You were sorely missed, but am so glad the week provided you with well needed R&R.
You're so right, when I first considered blogging, I didn't know what the heck I was doing but thankfully there were templates and simple enough instructions. And then there was the wait for visitors. Ron, do you remember your first visitor? When I received my first comment, I thought I'd bake the same cake you made up above. Thank you, btw!
I was so happy, not realizing how much better it was going to get. Did you ever see the film, Julie and Julia? Although I don't blog about a particular subject, as it states, it's a potpourri. But it's been like a diary...perhaps not as personal, but always there to bare and share. I've had some wonderful experiences and friendships. Some are still here, some are gone, but that's life, isn't it?
Thank you for your blog and you, Ron! As Anne Bancroft would say about her husband, Mel Brooks..."When he came home, I knew the party was about to begin." A metaphor for how I feel whenever I visit Being Ron! :))

  52. Thank you, Petra :)

I had a nice break. I was able to focus on my job, plus it allowed time for some R&R. But I'm glad to be back blogging again.

" And then there was the wait for visitors. Ron, do you remember your first visitor? When I received my first comment, I thought I'd bake the same cake you made up above."

Yes, I absolutely do. It was with the first blog I had started, back in 2006. And I remember getting that first comment and feeling SO HAPPY that someone had read my post and replied. What a great feeling that was!

Yes, I have seen Julie and Julia. In fact, I own that film. LOVE it! That was another film directed and written by Nora Ephron, who I adored.

"Although I don't blog about a particular subject, as it states, it's a potpourri. But it's been like a diary...perhaps not as personal, but always there to bare and share. I've had some wonderful experiences and friendships. Some are still here, some are gone, but that's life, isn't it?"

My blog is pretty much the same. I don't blog about a particular topic, I blog about a lot of different things. Like you shared....a potpourri. But I enjoy that because it keeps things interesting and fresh.

  53. CAKE!!! I LOVE CAKE!!! Happy (belated) Blog Anniversary! Seven years and so much fun packed into it. For some reason this post reminded me of being connected to bloggers and how we are connected by a person both of us met (through blogging). You met Peg in person and so did I. So it's like we met in person too! (almost!) I love looking back and seeing history rich with blogged memories. It is such a special thing. Here's to many, many more!!

"and how we are connected by a person both of us met (through blogging). You met Peg in person and so did I."

OMG...that's right, I totally forgot you met Peg in person too! And in fact, I think that's how I discovered your blog, through Peg! Yay, Peg!

It's been such a joy getting to know you these past couple of years. You have not only inspired me through your amazing talent as a photographer, but also through your written word. Thank you, my friend!

  57. Well, hell....gluten free or not, I'll take the stale, lonely piece left. If nothing else I'll place it on a safe shelf and use it to remind me of the places we've wandered in the past 7 years. Births, deaths...all of lives circumstances have stretched us into growing and evolving, much like this little corner in cyberspace. It's been an amazing journey. One that I'm glad to have had the company of others, the support and love of others. Your little home has been a safe haven for me for a whole lot of 24hours. And I look forward to having the privilege of visiting here, kicking off the shoes, flopping on the couch and playing with your trolls for many many MANY more! ((((( Ron ))))) Happy belated web log anniversary!!
