My inspiration for this post came from my dear, longtime blogging friend, Debbie @ Musings by an ND Domer's Mom, who is not only a gifted...
I wanted to update you guys and gals on my new job to let you know how it’s going, and also share some things I’ve learned about change.
First, let me say that I am so glad I made this change and enjoying it because I’m being challenged to learn new things – like, how different companies run and learning a whole new system. And I must say that this company is extremely well-organized so that it runs smoothly. It runs 100% better than my previous company, and I could tell that on the very first week I started working there.
The type of retail industry I’m in can be very hectic and erratic because every day is completely different than the day before. Therefore, a company needs to have some sort of in-place system to accommodate the uncertainty of each day because you never know what’s going to happen.
The company I currently work for has a MUCH higher volume of customer traffic than my previous place of employment. There are some days when the traffic is constant so that we’re servicing customer’s one right after the other and sometimes two customers at the same time. This job has taught me the art of multitasking and how to do it so that each customer feels they’re getting the attention they deserve. And a lot of that has to do with this company having a well-oiled system for handling high volume traffic, by being prepared with a well-staffed store, extremely competent managers, and high stock levels of products so that customers are able to purchase WHAT they need, WHEN they need it. Thus, customers leave HAPPY.
One of the many things I’m enjoying about this new job is that time flies when I’m there. I work anywhere from 8-9 hours a day, and because of the busyness, I feel as though I’m only working 4-5 hours. I’m one of those people who when I work, likes to be VERY busy.
However, this job did not come without feeling a bit of fear and nervousness when I first started eight weeks ago. It can be challenging to enter into a new place of employment when it’s been in existence for so long because you never know how you’ll ‘fit in’ with the other employees and whether you’ll be embraced. But I must say, every one there has been extremely accepting and helpful; making this transition a smooth one. I already feel part of the ‘group’ as if I’ve been there forever.
Also, this company seriously believes in continuing education and offers training classes on a regular basis to keep us updated on the latest products and techniques. In fact, I just recently completed an intensive two-day certified training seminar on skincare, makeup and hair care. And it was FABULOUS!
When you’ve been in this industry as long as I have, you can sometimes get very complacent and comfortable in doing things the same way; thinking that you already know everything. Yet, this new job has reminded me to always keep an open my mind and stay receptive to learning different ways of doing things, so that I continue to grow and stay sharp.
I feel very blessed and fortunate to have landed this job. And I'm very proud to work for this company because their first and foremost priority is giving outstanding customer service and building a loyal following. And they also know how to treat their employees with respect.
Oh, and one more thing. I've never worked for a company in my life who when they achieve their monthly goals and receive a bonus, shares that bonus with each and every employee who works in the store. So that when they profit, everyone profits!
So yeah, I'm really enjoying this new job.
And looking forward to where it takes me!
Have a great week, y'all!
