Definition of MURAL (noun)
: a work of art applied to and made integral with a wall or ceiling surface.

One of the things that's really cool about urban living are the murals. They are like works of art scattered throughout the city. I don't know how it is in other cities within the US, or around the world, but in Philadelphia and New York, you see murals everywhere. It's as if murals are a part of the fabric that shape the tapestry of the cities.

While walking around the city yesterday and today, I focused my camera lens on the murals. And I began to notice that over the past several months, the city has unveiled a few new ones.

And beautiful ones, at that!

Please enjoy...

I took two photographs of this mural because I wanted to capture pedestrians walking past it. Notice how the pedestrians appear as though they are part of the people within the mural. For a brief second, you can't tell which is which.

Aren't the colors in this mural amazing? This mural is outside a Target store, not far from where I live.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this one! Isn't it faaaaaaaabulous???

This mural is painted on the side of an old brownstone that sits next to a garden.

A parking lot mural.

I know this isn't technically a mural because it's not painted on a wall or a ceiling. However, I think it's gorgeous! It is painted on an electrical box, right next to an apartment building.

This one is perhaps my favorite. I see it every single day as I walk down this street.
Isn't it exquisite?

Hope you enjoyed some urban art!

Have a grrrrrrrrreat weekend, everyone!

Lovely! I started on the difficult task of choosing a favourite and kept changing my mind. Finally I chose the one that's technically not a mural but rapidly changed my mind when I saw the last one. That IS a beauty.

Okay then, I picked two - is that allowed? lol.

  2. Howdy, Ron! Cleveland has lots of murals. I've seen a few in person, but more on Instagram. I wish people would post their locations! I've never seen artwork on a parking deck or electrical box, but what a great idea! My favorite of the ones you posted is definitely the library one. So cool that it looks like actual people. But I love your goldfinch one as well! Hope you have a great weekend. XO

  3. Hey, Ron, these are great! I love how artists can bring an entire building to life. Why put up with drab concrete when you have a fabulous work of art? And thanks so much for sharing!

The next time you're in New York, you should check out the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Local artists have gotten together and painted this fantastic murals on these old factory buildings, giving them a brand new life.

Here's a link describing this funky scene. Take care, my brother!

  4. Ron, each and everyone of these is a masterpiece! I love them all, but I think my (two) faves are the first two (the library one) and the last one. They're incredible! I live in the burbs, however, in the city (downtown Chicago), they have many murals. That's one of the reasons I love to visit the city, to see all the cool stuff that we don't have in the burbs LOL!

    Fun post!

  5. Ron, these murals ROCK! I had to share them with my girlfriend because she's a graphic artist, so I knew she'd appreciate them and she did. She loved them all! That first one of the library is mind blowing because the people walking on the sidewalk look like they're in the mural, and the people in the mural look like they're on the sidewalk!

    Very cool post, dude!

  6. Such lovely murals, Ron -- thank you for sharing them with us! My town has a few murals, too -- some are on brick walls in town; others are on the walls at the shopping mall. I think they add a lot of visual interest to what could be considered a boring space.

The murals you've depicted look as if they were done by talented artists. I think ours were actually commissioned. And knock on wood, they've not been defaced by graffiti (or chewing gum!)

The electrical box and the parking lot are very clever, but I have to agree with you, that last photo is gorgeous -- so many interesting things to stare at!! Enjoy your weekend, my friend! xo

  7. Thank you, Valerie :) Isn't the last mural faaaaaaabulous? It's my favorite as well. And I see it almost every day while walking to work. It took them quite awhile to complete it because of all the amazing detail.

Yes, I love that one too. I think I love it mainly because it has cats on it, and I LOVE cats!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a lovely weekend!

  8. Howdy, my friend! :)

Yes, I used to blog with a woman who also lived in Cleveland and she would often post photographs of downtown Cleveland on your blog. First, I think Cleveland looks like such a charming city. Second, she posted photos of murals quite often. And they were fantastic!

The library mural is new. Isn't it beautiful? I can't get over the detail. The goldfinch one is not far from where I live, so I often walk by it.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a faaaaabulous weekend! I can't believe the weekend is almost here. This week went by so fast!

  9. Rob...OMG...the link you shared on the murals in Bushwick is freaking FANTASTIC! Those murals are AMAZING! And it's ironic you mentioned Bushwick, because I young lady I used to work with moved to Busckwick last January and loves it! I've never been to that part of Brooklyn, but I MUST go because it looks like such a cool place!

Thanks so much for stopping by, buddy. And again, THANKS for sharing the link. I will go back again later tonight and check out more of the murals.

    Have a grrrrrrrrreat weekend!

  10. Hey there Candice!

Isn't the mural of the library AMAZING? That's a new one. In fact, I only just noticed it two days ago when I walked down that street. I love the detail in it.

I've never been to Chicago, but always hear what a great city it is. I've seen photographs of it and it looks gorgeous. Someone told me that for being as big as it is, it's very organized and clean. And lots of culture!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a terrific weekend!

  11. Hiya Matt!

Aren't these murals fantabulous? Glad to hear that your girlfriend enjoyed them. The library mural is new. I only just recently spotted it the other day. I love the detail in the artwork. It looks 3-dimensional.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a most excellent weekend!

  12. Hello there Debbie!

Aren't they lovely? On my days off lately, I've been walking around the city enjoying the weather before it gets too hot, and noticed several new murals. So, I decided to spend a few days taking pictures of them.

"...think they add a lot of visual interest to what could be considered a boring space."

Yes, I totally agree! Murals add a lot of really great visuals to any city or town. They make any town or city into an art museum!

I believe most of the murals here in Philadelphia are commissioned as well. At least that's what I've read. And I'm surprised that they are not defaced with graffiti too, because Philly has a lot of areas where a great deal of defacing has occurred.

Isn't the electrical box such a genus idea? I mean, how clever to make a piece art out of metal box! It makes the street look so much better.

Thank so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a glorious weekend!

    X to you and Dallas

  15. Ron, these are exquisite! We don't see a lot of murals in Florida :( That's one of the things I miss about city living (especially living NY) all the creative energy.

LOVE the library ones! The colors are amazing! I love how the people in the mural are all wearing vintage clothing. Looks like from the 40's or 50's. The mural on the electrical box looks so mystical!

Have a wonderful weekend, Ron x

P.S. I heard from my cousin, who lives on Long Island that it's been very warm there. Hot and sticky she said. And I know how much you love the heat LOL!

  16. Hola Denise!

I know what you mean. Florida is not a state in which you see murals. Perhaps a few in Miami (Coconut Grove), but other than that, I don't remember seeing many. Maybe a few in downtown Orlando.

" I love how the people in the mural are all wearing vintage clothing. Looks like from the 40's or 50's."

Yes...I noticed that as well! That mural is a recent one. I only just saw it earlier this week.

Isn't the mural on the box faaaaaaaabulous? Mystical...yes!

Thanks so much for stopping by, girl. Hope you're enjoying a fantastic weekend!

OMG...the heat (humidity) here lately has been INSANE!!!!! Never have I ever experienced this much heat, THIS soon, before summer. I have a feeling this summer is going to be excruciating. Grrrrrrrrrrrr*#?!K#?%

  17. Ron, these murals are beautiful! My husband and I need to get over to Center City this summer to check them out. We have a few here in South Philly, but not like the ones picture here!

Love the first two of the library. But, I also love the parking lot one AND the final one. Gorgeous!

I hope you're enjoying a nice weekend. Can you believe the humidity these past couple of days? We've already had to put the A/C on because it's too damn hot, too soon. Stay cool! X

  18. Helloooooooooo there Elaine!

Aren't they stunning? Yes, many years ago when I was in SP (visiting the Italian Market), I spotted a few murals. The one I remember most is the one of Mayor Frank Rizzo!

The library mural is new. I just recently saw it earlier in the week. It's not too far from where I live, which surprised me that I didn't spot it sooner.

OMG...the frigging heat and humidity is killing me. I agree....too hot, too soon. I can only imagine what July and August are going to me like. I have a feeling the summer heat is going to linger on, and on, and on...right through September. God help me! HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a great rest of your weekend!

  19. Ron, this is what I miss about living in a city. I'm currently in the burbs (for my job), but I long to move back to a city. I'm hoping that my company opens up an office in the city because I will definitely transfer.

Beautiful murals! I really love that last one.

  20. Hi Daniel!

I LOVE city life. I enjoy going out to the burbs every so often to just have a change of scenery and be closer to nature. However, I will always feel more "at home" living in a city. And NEW YORK is my favorite city, hands down.

Isn't that last mural lovely? I can't get over the detail. It's truly a work of art!

Hope your weekend is going well. Thanks so much for stopping by!

  21. I love murals and urban art! Have I mentioned Art Alley in downtown Rapid City before? I know I've posted pics on Instagram. It's an entire alleyway filled with art - and it changes frequently, so it's always a fresh experience walking through there. You'd love it, my friend!

  22. Mark, don't ya just LOVE murals and urban art? IAnd yes, I do recall your Instagram pics of Art Alley in dowtown Rapid City. Faaaaaaaabulous! I'm very impressed by how progressive and artsy Rapid City is. From your photographs, it looks like such a cool, funky place!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Wishing you and Tara a super week!

    X to you both!
