Post updates by email:

A terrible tragedy has occurred in my life.

And no, this tragedy has nothing to with the fact that they discontinued my favorite face wash from Oil of Olay.

No….it’s MUCH worse.

Worse than the time I found out that Lady Gaga wasn’t really a man in drag.

And worse than the time I got caught FORGING my report card in Catholic grammar school because I didn’t want my parents to find out I had gotten 7 red F’s.

Last week, while heading over to my favorite video store I discovered this sign….

Now I want you all to try and visualize a 55-year old man (acting like Joan Crawford) throwing himself against the door and banging his fists against the glass, screaming, “NO! NO!…THIS CAN’T BE TRUE! PLEASE TELL ME THAT I’M SLEEPING AND WHEN I WAKE UP THIS WILL JUST BE A DREAM!”

But I wasn‘t dreaming, it was a harsh reality.

(like the harsh reality of when MGM Studios fired Miss Crawford)

TLA Video CLOSED!

And quite frankly, I don’t know what I’m going to do because it was the last video store in this city. Blockbuster went out of business years ago, along with Hollywood Video, so TLA was the only place I could rent movies.

Well, I guess there’s always Netflix, but I’m not one of those people who can rent a video and then wait for it to be mailed to me. No way. I’m the kind of person who spontaneously feels the desire to watch a movie and wants it NOW.

It’s called instant gratification.

OMG….I’m utterly devastated about this!

However, I did find out from someone at work that there’s an adult video store (which means they rent DIRTY movies and sell glow-in-the-dark CONDOMS) about five blocks from where I live, which also rents selected Hollywood films. Which might not be a bad idea because I can rent “Gone With The Wind” and “Danny And Steve Gone Wind Surfing” on the same night.

*insert snicker*

But I ask you……what the hell is HAPPENING to this world?

First, all the music stores are closing down because of the Internet.

Second, all the bookstores are closing down because of the Internet.

And now, all the video stores are closing down because of the Internet.

I’m so mad at the Internet right now, I could spit rusty razor blades out of my mouth.

I HATE YOU INTERNET!

Oh wait. That’s right. I can’t hate the Internet.

I blog.

I LOVE YOU INTERNET!

  2. Oh, no, another victim of "progress!" Damn you, Internets!! Sorry to hear this, Ron, even though you got a great post out of it. Netflix has streaming video so you can watch films on your computer or you can get some device and view them on your TV. However, I believe they're about to lose a big film supplier, so the streaming video may soon be down to a trickle. And btw, “Danny And Steve Gone Wind Surfing” is actually the sequel to "Gone With the Wind." The South shall rise again!!

    Have a great holiday, buddy!

  4. Hi Ron,

I am sorry to learn of this.
I bet that you will be lost! Most people are big creatures of habit and when a favorite store closes, it is a stress.

Yes; the internet has changed so much, for better or worse.

But, even before the internet, changes were alreadys a comin'...

I witnessed in my home state how the big brand names in the late 80's began edging out or replacing local businesses... We got the top local book seller that closed & Borders bought their stores. I also remember seeing Neiman Marcus come, and seeing(later when I came back) Macys eat up a local dept store chain.

Changes and more changes! It is ongoing...

You have to study your options. Did you try that inventory sale to buy a few titles cheaply??

    Good luck in any case!

  5. I feel your pain, Ron. Your devastation has entered my soul like a warning of things to come. How many other unhappy people are affected by this terrible news? But hang on, there's always Amazon...grins. And iPhone, or iPad, where you can download immediately.

Didn't know Blockbusters had gone though. That's AWFUL news.
I must tell you, seeing your PrtSc picture... I did the same with my WI blog so I could show it to those members who aren't computer literate. The only trouble was, I couldn't get a signal in the WI hall. Damn and drat, foiled again!

    Have a cheerful day.

and when they do they can plug in their ear thingies and listen to music while they text as their car parks itself

I used to love browsing the video store to find something unusual
now it's setting up a Netflix list

  8. what's up ron. sorry to hear about your favorite video store going belly up.

i have netflix, why i don't know - can't stand the TV and movies suck these days - nothing to watch. you can stream movies with netflix, so you can have instant gratification, but you might not be able to stream the latest movie. how dumb is that on their part. shipping is fast as long as it's in stock.

    i loves me some internet.

  9. We do Netflix through XBox which means we don't have to wait for DVDs to arrive and mail them back. Down side is that you don't get all the choices that are available through DVD...but at least we can usually find something to watch if we want to see a movie.

  10. Good Morning Linda~

    ".....(Netflix? do I dare admit...........)"

I know, so many people use Netflix and say they the love it. I just can't see myself using it though. I'm probably going to have to break down and get CABLE so I can get On Demand.

"I love you Internet too because without it I would never have met wonderful YOU!"

Awww....same here, dear lady. So glad for the Internet or I wouldn't have met YOU and all the awesome peeps I've met over these past 6 years. Honestly, the Internet truly is a wonderful thing! And to think that at one time I said, "I will NEVER get a computer or go online."

    Never say, NEVER - HA!

One of these days I know we will meet in person. Whether you come east or I come west.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, Linda. Hope you're having a great Labor Day!

"Oh, no, another victim of "progress!" Damn you, Internets!!"

Grrrrrrrrrr...I know, ain't it the PITS?

And as much as I DO love the Internet, it's been the reason for so many businesses/stores closing down. I'm surprised Barnes & Noble is still in business. The Borders down the block from me closed in the Spring :(

"Netflix has streaming video so you can watch films on your computer or you can get some device and view them on your TV. However, I believe they're about to lose a big film supplier, so the streaming video may soon be down to a trickle."

WOW...I had no idea Netflix offered that?!?! I thought you could only rent films and then have them mailed to you. Well, since you also shared that they may be losing a big film supplier, I may pass - fiddle-dee-dee!

"And btw, “Danny And Steve Gone Wind Surfing” is actually the sequel to "Gone With the Wind." The South shall rise again!!"

Bwahahahahhahahahhaahaha! OMG, Rob, I just SPEWED my morning coffee while reading that! That was BRILLIANT, man!

"I bet that you will be lost! Most people are big creatures of habit and when a favorite store closes, it is a stress."

OMG, first Blockbuster, then Hollywood Video, now TLA!!!!

I suppose I could go back to renting at the public library. However, they only rent older movies.

"Yes; the internet has changed so much, for better or worse.

But, even before the internet, changes were alreadys a comin'.."

True. So true. Computers and the Internet have changed so many things since the late 80's. But, I will say....I think the pros outweight the cons.

"We got the top local book seller that closed & Borders bought their stores."

Isn't it something how companies are buying other companies? It's happening a lot in my business to. In fact, last Spring another company bought the company that I work for.

" Did you try that inventory sale to buy a few titles cheaply?? "

Yup, but by the time I got there the sale was over. However, the other day I looked in the window and saw A LOT of videos/DVD's still on the shelves. They may just sell the rest on their website.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, my friend. Have a super week!

  14. Well, this is the first time I've come to know about TLA. Oh they have Alice in Wonderland (RAW) !
I watched Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs earlier (not-Disney version)

Today, I'll spend the day watching "Beauty and the Beast", followed by "An Enchanted Christmas" and "Belle's Magical World" (All Disney Versions)

There is a "Gentlemen's Club" and "The Stage Shop" in my neighbourhood. Thankfully, my dear old aunts whom mother trusts watch over me haven't figured out yet !

  15. Good morning Valerie~

" But hang on, there's always Amazon...grins. And iPhone, or iPad, where you can download immediately."

Yup....I think I'm eventually have to do that. One of the guys I work with just got a iPad and says he loves it because he can download books AND movies!

"Didn't know Blockbusters had gone though. That's AWFUL news."

Yes...they went out of business several years ago. We only had few here in Philadelphia so I switched to Hollywood Video and then TLA. But now......they're ALL gone. And TLA was truly the BEST video store because they rented all kinds of films - one's that you could find anywhere else.

"I must tell you, seeing your PrtSc picture... I did the same with my WI blog so I could show it to those members who aren't computer literate. The only trouble was, I couldn't get a signal in the WI hall. Damn and drat, foiled again!"

    Damn and drat, foiled again!!!

I actually took that photo with my camera and then downloaded it. I know you can capture an image online, but I don't know how to do it.

Thanks oodles for stopping by, dear lady. Have a cheerful day and week!

P.S. in Catholic school, whenever you got an F grade (failure) on a subject, the nuns would write it on your report in RED, so that you'd be embarrassed and would hopefully never get another F. One year, I actually got 7 red F's, so I forged my report card with my parents signature. OH BOY....did I ever get in trouble when they found out!!

"I used to love browsing the video store to find something unusual

Oh, me too! That was the great thing about video stores - browsing. And TLA had the BEST of unusual films. It's the same with department stores - everyone is buy online instead of actually walking to a store and shopping.

I think I need to investigate more about Netflix, because Rob mentioned something about streaming films to your computer or TV.

And TLA was one of the coolest video stores because you could find all sorts of unusual films there. They had a great selection of documentaries. I LOVE documentaries!

"you can stream movies with netflix, so you can have instant gratification, but you might not be able to stream the latest movie. how dumb is that on their part. shipping is fast as long as it's in stock."

Yes, that's what Rob also mentioned, which I had no idea. I may have to look more into Netflix because my options are narrowing down to ZILCH.

  29. Hi Ron, oh dear lord I know what you mean. As much as I enjoy the internet, it's taking over everything. When I shop, I like to actually go to a store and shop. I've never ordered anything over the internet unless it's something I've already had.

Many of the video stores in my area have closed too. I've never tried Netflix but I've heard you can rent them directly to your computer or TV. I may have to eventually do that myself.

Hope you had a nice holiday weekend.

Yup...meeeeeeeee too! I think I can probably count on one hand how many times I've actually bought something over the Internet. And like I shared with Herman, when I shop I like to browse and actually LOOK at the stuff (touching, feeling, reading) before I purchase. But hey, the Internet is taking over, so Netflix might just be something I'll have to try.

Either that, or I could just keep watching my own DVD's over and over again - HA!

  31. Good morning, Ron!

So I'm late yet again... but I'll be back on schedule by Friday.

All of the video stores in our area have closed as well. It is sad, really. The only way we can get that "instant gratification" is to go to the grocery store or to CVS and rent from the RedBox.

At least you can still get "instant gratification" from the dirty video store. Now that *does* sound like fun!

    Have a wonderful week, Ron!

    XOXO

  32. Oh Ron. It's the way we're headed and I wonder where it will end.
I'm thankful for the internet because I do a lot of shopping that way. When you live a long way from any shops, don't drive and are getting on in years, it's a blessing. I don't have to rely on shop assistants trying to sell me something, just because it's the only one they sell. I do my own research online, read customer (and professional) reviews and then make my choice.

BUT. I do understand your need to be hands on with stuff. I want to buy second hand accessories for my camera, like I used to, but can't find a shop for that any longer. It is sad but inevitable, considering the overhead costs of having a shop.

Isn't Netflix instant? I don't know as we don't have it here.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, it is VERY sad what's happening to all the local businesses such as book stores, music stores, and video stores going out of business.

but, I could never hate the internet!

I know, isn't it the pits? TLA was the last video store here in Philly - boo-hoo! I actually stopped by yesterday and discovered that they're selling thru there videos and you can get them very cheap, so I may go back and purchase a few.

"At least you can still get "instant gratification" from the dirty video store. Now that *does* sound like fun!!"

Yes, everything you shared is very true. The Internet is faaaabulous for those who are not close to shops and don't drive. In fact, I know A LOT of people who do most of their shopping through the Internet because it saves time in their busy lives.

And like you also shared, having an Internet business cuts down considerably with the overhead costs of having a shop (rent, salaries, etc.).

But, it's the 'hands on' and 'people contact' I miss.

Yes, I just discovered that Netflix IS instant, which I didn't know. So, that might be my only option for movies.

  37. first, let me extend my sincere condolences at your loss, my dear Ron. TLA must have suffered for years, another victim of the internet. Oh yes, the wretched love-hate conundrum that is the internet. And, as you noted, it parallels pretty darned closely with the standard Hollywood love-hate scripts both fiction and non-fiction. hope your new video store works out. I'm surprised that you don't own copies of your favorite films? Are you among my circle of friends that absolutely MUST watch the Wizard of Oz every Thanksgiving? Cristy and I are random users of movies on demand via our cable provider. Strange array of selections but for the convenience and cost, we're reasonably satisfied. I've not ever subscribed to netflix but i was under the impression that 9 out of 10 people in the US had a netflix account. maybe I'm misinformed? sending smiles & a hug :) diane

"I'm REALLY worried the public library is going to be next. And I refuse to buy a Kindle or Nook or whatever the hell they are trying to force down our throats. I like to hold a book, damnit! I'm old!"

Funny you mentioned the public library because I have a feeling one of the library branches by apartment is getting ready to close. It amazes me that Barnes & Noble is still open. But I think their "big sell thing" is NOOK - that's why they're still going strong. Like you, if I want to read a book, I want to HOLD it.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing, dear lady. Have a great rest of your week!

  45. Blockbusters in Canada only just recently announced that they were closing their doors. I don't go there often, but they are my chain when I so desire a movie night. I don't know what I am going to do now for those infrequent movie fixes that I require. I hope that you can find a solution.

    handing over a tissue...

I am sure it will be alright though Ron. We are all here for you in your time of need. Just let it out. Change is hard, but we will survive. ;)

  46. Hey there Katherine~

    Grrrrrrreat to see ya!

"Blockbusters in Canada only just recently announced that they were closing their doors."

WOW you mean they JUST NOW are closing their doors? Here in the States it started several years ago - one by one - they all closed. So did Hollywood Video, and now TLA!

    *sniffle* *sniffle*

"I am sure it will be alright though Ron. We are all here for you in your time of need. Just let it out. Change is hard, but we will survive. ;)"

    taking the tissue...

    Thank you. And you're right.

And as Gloria Gaynor once said, "I will survive!" HA!

Always FAB seeing you, Katherine! Hope you're having a wonderful week!

  47. Oh no!!!

You're right, you can't HATE the internet, but it sure feels like it sometimes! When I walk through the High Street of ... well, pretty much any English town or city, really ... I'm stunned by the lack of small specialist shopd. They've all be crowded out by the Usual Suspects: W H Smiths, Marks and Spencers, Baker's Ovens, Boots, Holland ad Barrett, Superdrug etc, plus cheapo '£1' stores and building societies.

If you want something those stores don't sell, you HAVE to search the internet. I resent that.

  48. HHHHHHHHHHHHey Jay~

"You're right, you can't HATE the internet, but it sure feels like it sometimes!

    Yup....it sure does, doesn't it? Kinda a love/hate relationship.

But much more LOVE than hate - tee, hee!

*nodding my head up and down*

Same here, Jay! Everything has become homogenized.

Oh, well...I better get use to it and start using Netflix or I would be watching movies much anymore :(

"Danny and Steve Gone Wind Surfing'. ROFL!!"

    *aren't I a silly, silly man?

Always so FAB to see you, Libra friend! Thank you for stopping by!

Enjoy the rest of your week......X

  49. I have to say I do kind of agree with you. I miss being able to go to a video store and search through the shelves of videos to pick that one I want to watch. Before I read your blog we were discussing how post offices might close. This would put a huge damper on even netflix. What is this world coming to?!?!

  50. Hey there cestlavie~

" I miss being able to go to a video store and search through the shelves of videos to pick that one I want to watch."

Exactly....the whole fun part about renting a video from a video store is the SEARCHING. Sometimes I would spend close to an hour in TLA just browsing through each section of the store.

" I miss being able to go to a video store and search through the shelves of videos to pick that one I want to watch."

HA! Ironic you mentioned post offices because the one closest to my apartment is closing this year. Probably after Christmas.

Yup....what is this world coming to?!?!?

Thank you for stopping by, my friend. Hope you're having a swell week!

  53. I totally can relate. The Blockbuster near us is actually still open. On occasion, I'll pop in there. We have signed up for Netflix and cancelled twice. I found the problem was that I'd get a couple of movies, they'd sit on top of the tv for ages and I'd pretty much forget they were there. When I would remember, inevitably it wasn't something I was in the mood for. I like being able to jump in the car and pick out a couple of movies when the spirit moves me. We also tried the streaming thing with Netflix but the list of title is so small. I wouldn't find anything I liked. So, we rarely watch movies at home. Times, they are a changing.

Yup....that's exactly what I'm afraid of, getting a few movies and forgetting to watch them. Like you, I just wanna watch a movie when the spirit moves me.

That's what I hear about Netflix.....the list of title is limited.

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing on this post, my friend. Always enjoyed and appreciated!

    Have a great weekend!
