Have you ever bought an article of clothing that you thought you were going to enjoy, but then ended up hating it because it just didn’t feel right whenever you wore it? And every time you put it on you think to yourself, "WHY IN GOD'S NAME DID I EVER BUY THIS!?!?"

About six years ago, I bought a black leather jacket on sale because the store was going out of business and they had only one jacket left in my size. It was originally $175.00 marked down to $99.00. I tried it on in the store and initially thought it felt great on my body, but then after wearing it a couple of times, something just didn’t feel right.

First of all the leather itself is very STIFF, but I assumed that after wearing it for a season it would soften up.

NOT!

I don't think if I laid that jacket out on the city streets during a severe hail storm and then used a meat tenderizer on it, would it EVER soften up.

Even after SIX years, it still feels as if I’m wearing the Tin Man suit from the Wizard of Oz...

I can barely move my arms and torso without feeling the need to apply a few squirts of WD-40 Oil to loosen up my joints so I can move in it...

And another thing I hate about this leather jacket is that it weighs about FIFTY pounds because it has a thermal liner that you can zip in during the colder winter months. But even without the liner it still weighs FORTY pounds. Earlier this winter I handed the jacket to someone at work, just so they could feel the weight of it. And after they almost fell over face front onto the floor, they said, "Damn...this jacket is HEAVY!"

I swear, every time I put the jacket on it feels like I’m wearing one of those dental aprons they use at the dentist office whenever you get X-rays…

Here are photographs of the leather jacket and liner.

I don’t know why I’m sharing this post with you, other than a few days ago I was wearing this leather jacket and one of the cashiers at the drug store complimented me on how much he loved it by saying, “Oh…I love that leather jacket you have on. It’s so nice-looking!”

Whereupon I smiled politely and said, “Thank you, would you like it? Because I HATE this FRIGGIN' thing and I wish I NEVER bought it!"

Have a maaaaahvelous Monday y'all!

  1. OMG Ron! This is SO funny!! Personally, I have this same problem...often in fact. I buy things and hang them in my closet. Six months later, I go in there and take it out to wear. I put it on and I HATE it!! I mean HATE it...what on earth possessed me to EVER purchase such a hideous thing?? It looks like hell on me and feels even worse! I sure can relate to what you are saying!! I have a TON of things all lined up to be donated already!! LOVE that last pic!! Actually, it IS a nice looking jacket, but if it is that uncomfortable...not good. :( Have a great Monday! xo Jeanne and the girlz

  2. i know exactly what you're talking about regarding the weight and stiffness of the jacket. yeah, that's heavy. my style changes and i have bought stuff i thought i would like and then later i'm like W.I.T.H.! so did you give the man your jacket?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Yes! Oh my God, Ron - this will come as no surprise, but I have a leather jacket I feel precisely the same way about! It's stiff and heavy and just feels awkward. Looks fantastic, but I hate it. And that is only one example. I've been thinking about it this weekend - about forcing myself to get rid of things I don't like no matter how good a shape they are on.

I love it! I think we all have those retail malfunctions--it's almost like a rite of passage.

It's so funny--I'm reading about what a nightmare this jacket has been for you and yet I found myself looking at the photo and saying, "Hmm, that looks like a nice jacket!"

But I'll take your word for it. I don't need to be clanking around town singing "If I only had a brain!"

Excellent post, buddy! Have a great week and take care!

  5. I rarely purchase clothing unless I REALLY love it, but wouldn't you know, I bought a leather bomber jacket in the 80's and hated the damn thing! Heavy, stiff, sleeves too short, etc. and I paid $99 for it!!! Maybe that's our problem!

It did come in handy when Middle Child had to dress up as Amelia Earhart for a book report years ago....hahaha

  7. Ron, this post is so funny I laughed out loud. That last photo is hilarious! You look so cute as the Tin Man. Yes, I have bought clothing that I ended up hating as well. I once bought a pair of shoes that were a bit tight, but thought I could stretch them out after wearing them for awhile, but I was wrong. Those shoes are beautiful but they hurt any time I wear them, so they sit in my closet and collect dust. And they were so expensive. I should have returned them, but didn't.

Thank you for making me laugh this morning, Ron. I needed it.

    Have a wonderful week x

Exactly! I normally won't buy something on an impulse, like this leather jacket. But it was SUCH a great price that I did.

"Actually, it IS a nice looking jacket, but if it is that uncomfortable...not good."

Thank you. Yes, it is a very nice-looking jacket, but OMG..is it ever STIFF and HEAVY. Oy vey!

  10. Good morning Valerie!

"Actually, it IS a nice looking jacket, but if it is that uncomfortable...not good."

Yes, that's the thing...it LOOKS great, but OMG...is it ever STIFF and HEAVY. I don't wear it that much, mostly in the Fall and on days during the Winter when it's not too cold. And actually, it's NOT very warm, considering it has a thermal liner.

"So... what ARE you going to do with it?"

I keep it in my closet as a reminder to NOT impulse buy - HA!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a lovely week!

" my style changes and i have bought stuff i thought i would like and then later i'm like W.I.T.H.!"

I've done that several times myself. I also bought a fleece hoodie one time in which the HOOD was so heavy that whenever I wore it I felt like I was going to fall over backwards - HA!

"so did you give the man your jacket?"

No. He was pretty BIG guy, so it wouldn't have fit him.

  15. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! I bought a leather coat, with a sheepskin lining and I have NEVER worn it. I can hardly lift it and don't really want a mammoth workout every time I wear a coat. I bought it online (in a sale also), so had no idea of the weight, until it came. I have lost a lot of weight since I bought it (so has Mo), so I gave it to her, in the end. She has worn it and the weight doesn't seem to bother her. I will never buy another leather coat or jacket, that's for sure.

Do you know what's funny? I work with a girl who has a HUGE shoe fetish and can't tell you how many times she's bought shoes because she LOVED the style, but they didn't fit properly, so she couldn't wear them. And most of her shoes are by Michael Kors. She LOVES anything by Michael Kors.

  19. Ron, you crack me up -- seriously!! I totally sympathize with your buyers remorse. I think that's something we've ALL done (at least, I have!).

This leather jacket of yours would appear to be a wise and frugal purchase. Sadly, the weight of the material is a real detriment and makes it bulky and uncomfortable. I like to be comfortable in my clothes, don't you??

Last year I bought a pair of Nike sneakers that I thought fit my needs -- something I could wear on cold weather walkies with my dog. I think I've worn them maybe twice. They're just NOT comfortable, no matter how practical they might be, and I suspect they're headed for Goodwill soon, ha!

Sometimes we just have to bite the bullet, my friend. As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure -- spread the wealth around. Share that jacket with someone who needs it!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well from the picture I do have to say despite all the negative you listed it really is a nice looking jacket! Of course comfort does come first but it definitely is snazzy. Why don't you try selling it? Craigslist is great for that sort of thing and I am sure someone would love it! Love the tin man reference by the way now I have visions of you walking around in the tin man suit lol. Halloween idea?

  21. " I can hardly lift it and don't really want a mammoth workout every time I wear a coat."

HA! Babs, I loved that because that's exactly what it feels like whenever I wear it....a mammoth workout!

"so I gave it to her, in the end. She has worn it and the weight doesn't seem to bother her."

Excellent! At least she's getting use out of it.

It's funny because for as much as I love the look and smell of leather, I find that I don't like wearing it (things like a coat, jacket or pants) unless it's very soft. And also, I don't find leather to be all that warming during the winter months. The only thing I really wear that's leather are my shoes and belts.

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Have a lovely week!

"This leather jacket of yours would appear to be a wise and frugal purchase. Sadly, the weight of the material is a real detriment and makes it bulky and uncomfortable. I like to be comfortable in my clothes, don't you??"

Yes...absolutely! Comfort is what it's all about for me, when it comes to clothing. In fact, if I could have all clothing made out of FLEECE I would love it because fleece is soft and comfortable. I love fleece!

" I think I've worn them maybe twice. They're just NOT comfortable, no matter how practical they might be.."

Isn't that the PITS? You buy something, but yet you can't wear it because it just doesn't feel right.

" As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure -- spread the wealth around. Share that jacket with someone who needs it!"

Great idea, my friend! In fact, I may do that at the end of Winter. Just give it to someone or to the Goodwill.

"Why don't you try selling it? Craigslist is great for that sort of thing and I am sure someone would love it!"

It has one of the snaps on the wrist missing, because it fell off last year, so I probably couldn't sell it. But what I may do is give it to Goodwill at the end of the season.

" Love the tin man reference by the way now I have visions of you walking around in the tin man suit lol. Halloween idea?"

Thank you! And you just gave me a great idea about using the jacket next year for a Halloween costume, if I don't give it away. I can spray paint it SILVER and then go as The Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz - Ha!

  24. Tee..heee! Definitely ditch that jacket Ron. Sounds like it's bringing nothing but bad vibes. That's funny about the store clerk.

I make a lot of my own clothes so I can adjust, choose things to suit exactly what I want in terms of color, fabric, style...it's a nice skill to have, make that skills: knitting, sewing, crochet.

Ever thought of taking up knitting? A LOT of men knit (and very well for some of them too) at least that way you could make sweaters to suit perfectly. A leather jacket might be a bit tough though. LOL, PUN INTENDED!!!

  25. In the mid-80s, my brother just had to have one of those Michael Jackson red leather jackets with all the zippers. I tried to talk him out of buying it. My mom tried to talk him out of buying it. My dad tried to talk him out of buying it. He refused to listen, and bought it.

He wore the damn thing one time, but was met with so much ridicule by his classmates it hung in his closet forevermore afterwards.

Nowadays, of course, it would probably be worth a small fortune...but naturally, he got rid of it long ago. Too bad, huh?

  32. I once misguidedly bought (in the '80s, so you can make allowances, right?) a pair of white dungerees in the ultra-trendy King's Road in London. I wore them for a few weeks before I realised that I looked like a gay decorator and then quietly consigned them to (ironically) a closet, never to see the light of day again.

I like blue jeans. A couple years ago I thought maybe I should buy some different type pants because well, blue jeans aren't exactly always appropriate. After all I didn't want to be grouped with the guy who showed up at his grandfather's wake in a tee shirt.

So I bought some different type pants. I'm wearing a pair of them now. God! I hate these things...

  37. Man, you just had to bring up that memory of "the shoes". Ya see, these were some awesome shoes. Still are, in fact. I bought them from a European import store, and just had to have them after trying them only. Only thing was that the heels of the shoes dug gouges into the heels of my feet if I walked more than a block. And damn it, these were amazing shoes. And still they sit in my closet...

And now that I think about it, I think this would make a good blog post. Hmmm. (see what you started?!)

  38. I have.....one or two things in the closet that need to go. NOT cuz they're warn out, mind you. I'm embarrassed to admit that some still have the tags on. *sigh*
Oh--and Yup--been there, done that.....with a leather jacket even! And yes, it weighed a ton. And yes, it looked great on the hanger. It even looked nice on the body. But it was constricting and heavy and awful to wear. And you toss it on in the frigid, cold weather and....voile'.....instantly WORSE.
NOW I know how why cows don't go zipping around in the snow and cold to keep warm, huh! Poor cows!!! :-(

Oh shucks, Herman....but there isn't anything worse than shoes that don't fit properly. I have a small foot yet wide, therefore it's so challenging to find a shoe that fits. It's especially hard if the shoe has a European narrow cut because they pinch my feet. OUCH!

  49. I bought an expensive suit last year in Canada, when my brother was getting married in India.

Now, in Canada, it felt all nice and comfortable and I didn't mind splurging.

By the time I went to India last year however, I had lost some weight. And it was terribly hot. And the wedding was in a village - Dusty, Hot, and there were uninvited guests such as Water Buffaloes, Goats and Chickens.

You can imagine now how much I hated wearing the oversized, wollen jacket then.

Fortunately, I was able to change into much lighter clothes later in the day.

OMG...I would have died because I can't stand being HOT. And it was the same for me when I lived in Florida because of the heat and humidity. Things I can wear here, I could NEVER where in the tropics. When I first moved back east, I had to buy a completely different wardrobe to match the seasons.
