Dreams have always fascinated me.

I seem to go through periods when I dream a lot. And then there are other periods when I dream very little or not at all.

Although, I’ve read that we always dream; however, we don’t always remember them. So perhaps that's why.

Lately, I've been going through a period of not dreaming, or rather not remembering.

Many years ago, I purchased a dream dictionary as a way of helping me to decipher my dreams. But eventually, after I took a class in Dream Interpretation, I learned that the “dreamer” is the best interpreter. Dream dictionaries are good as far as giving a broad over-view of dreams, but I think our own individual subconscious will often use specific symbols that only we fully understand. I used to keep a dream journal and a pen next to my bed in which I would write my dreams, even in the middle of the night after I woke up from a dream. I would grab the pen and write the dream in the dark. Upon reading it in the morning, I would get a crystal clear understanding of what the dream meant and why I dreamed it.

Today, I thought I’d share a few recurring dreams, and then invite you to share yours if you wish.

Symbolic Dreams-

Elevator

I’m in an elevator and it’s going up and down. Sometimes the elevator is moving fast; other times, it’s moving excruciatingly slow. I’ve even had dreams where the elevator feels as though the cable has snapped and it’s crashing downward, while I frantically push all the buttons; hoping that it stops the elevator. I always wake up before it crashes; usually dripping in sweat.

*This dream usually occurs when I feel confused about the direction of my life, or when I find it difficult to decide about something.

Telephone

Another recurring dream is that I’m desperately trying to make a telephone call on a push-button phone. I keep pressing the buttons in total frustration, because I can't seem to dial the number correctly. And when I finally dial the number, I keep getting disconnected and have to redial all over again.

*This dream usually occurs when I’m not listening to my intuition, or not hearing its guidance correctly.

Teeth

This recurring dream involves my teeth. I’m pulling my teeth out of my gums, or my teeth are so loose, they just fall out on their own as I spit them into a sink.

*This dream usually occurs when I’m not speaking my truth, or finding it difficult to communicate whatever it is I want to express.

Dreams Taken Literally-

Water Leaks

This one freaks me out because whenever I have a dream about a water leak, it always happens. For instance, several months after I moved into my current apartment four years ago, I had a dream that the ceiling was leaking water from the apartment above mine. And low and behold, one morning I woke up to the sound of water tapping on the stainless steel sink in my kitchen. And when I looked up at the area directly around the kitchen cabinet, I saw a water leak. Thank heaven I was home because I immediately called maintenance, who discovered a water pipe above my kitchen with a crack in it. Had I not been home, God only knows how much water damage I would have had.

And in my previous apartment, which I rented in the same building eleven years ago, I dreamt there was a huge water leak in my bathroom. Ironically, one night (at almost one o'clock in the morning), I was in my bathroom brushing my teeth getting ready for bed, when suddenly I heard what sounded like a torrential downpour of rain outside the window. However, I quickly discovered that the sound was coming from the apartment above mine, directly above my bathroom. And then CRASH!...the water just started pouring down from cracks in the ceiling and the overhead bathroom heat lamp. Had I not been home, water damage would have destroyed my entire studio apartment. I was up for HOURS, catching the hot, rusty water falling from the ceiling with two plastic buckets and a trash can. Not only was the water pouring into my bathroom, but also my kitchen and closet containing all my clothing. I cannot believe that none of my belongings were ruined. Again, thank heaven I was home.

Finally (at 4 AM), the Philadelphia Water Department located the busted pipe and repaired it.

For the inconvenience I had to endure that night, I made the property manager of the building move me to another apartment on an upper floor that was recently renovated for the same price I was currently paying. And I also demanded a two-year lease with no price increase.

All of which I got.

Yup, in the classic words of Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford in 'Mommie Dearest' (aka me), "DON'T FUCK WITH ME, FELLAS!!!"

Okay, now it's your turn to share your own feedback on dreaming; whether you recall your dreams; or any recurring dreams you may have.

Have a dreamy rest of your week, y'all!

But please don't dream of water leaks -- 😂
