My Promise:

I promise this will be the LAST post you’ll ever have to read that has anything to do with my teeth.

*I think*

But, I just couldn’t allow this MONUMENTAL event to pass by without sharing it with you faaaaaaabulous guys and gals.

What would you say if I told you it’s been OVER 20 years since my last professional teeth cleaning?

Did you all just GASP?

Did you all just FAINT?

Did you all just do a POOPIE CRAP in your pants?

Well, Monday, my new dental hygienist did all three of those things when I told her.

However, just before she fell off her stool and cracked her skull on the trash can she said, “I’m amazed your teeth look this clean. How did you do it for over 20 years?”

I replied, “Well, easy, I use TWO different kinds of toothpaste - one for plaque, one for whitening, I floss every time I eat, and use a perio-therapy oral rinse twice a day for my gums.

After twenty years, I imagine she thought my teeth would look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame….

But I’ve got to be honest, I still think my mouth looked as though it were in need of a professional cleaning. I had quite a bit of tartar buildup behind my lower front teeth. Also, my teeth had a slight yellow cast to them which was caused by the two cups of dark roast coffee I drink everyday. Plus, I’m a light smoker.

I sincerely thought when the hygienist saw my mouth she was going to get wide-eyed and say, “I need to get out the jackhammer, a Brillo pad, and a bottle of liquid Clorox.”

Apparently, my teeth weren’t as heinous as I thought because she didn’t have to do as deep a scaling as I imagined she would.

Last week, my dentist did a full mouth examination and said that my gums were in excellent shape, and my teeth were tight and strong.

Looking at my x-rays, though, it was quite obvious that I will be having some serious work done on two of my teeth. One being the bridge that caused the abscess, and the other being an upper molar that needs a crown. But, other than that my teeth are healthy.

Who knew?

And I was SHOCKED because I assumed after looking at the x-rays my dentist was going to say, “Oh goodie, now I can buy that condo in Bermuda I always wanted.”

Anyway, after the hygienist finished polishing my teeth she handed me a mirror and said, “Look, Ron!”

*blinking*

Holy macanoli!….it appeared as though I was staring at the reflection of someone else’s mouth.

My teeth GLOWED! And when I ran my tongue over them they felt as smooth as butta.

I’ve decided not to eat or drink anything for the rest of my life because I don’t want to dirty them.

Here’s a photo of the end result…..

Cheese!

Wishing you a sparkling weekend everyone!

Update (Saturday the 27th): Hi everyone! Just wanted to let you know that because of the hurricane which will be effecting us here on the east coast today and tomorrow, we may lose power. Therefore, if you don't see me online, you'll know that's why. Take care, be safe, and I'll see ya soon! X

  1. ...Hello Ron! *waving* That is one glorious smile you have there my friend! Beautiful! :o) And congrat's on the great dentist appointment, especially since you haven't had one in 20 years! Wow! You know, I had read once that the annual teeth cleanings aren't really necessary if, like you, do regular dental care on your own religiously.

...I have extremely sensitive teeth due to my illness so I have to use Sensodyne and then use a topical fluoride cream. And anymore you feel like you have to take out a second mortgage just to get dental work done! Sheesh! :o\

...Btw, I love the lil' GIF image up there - too cute! All you need here is the sound of the dentist's drill and this post would be complete! *shudders* lol... ;o)

...Enjoy your Friday & your pearly whites! :o)

    ...Blessings

  2. Ooooh my favourite subject. NOT! However, I have to say that your teeth look sparklingly good. I bet when you flash a smile people fish out their sunglasses. Can you tell I'm jealous?

I wish I'd had a good hygienist when I was younger, it might have prevented the loss of teeth. Heehee, folk here have never seen such a toothless old crone.

    Have an enjoyable weekend.

  3. Your teeth look A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Ron! I have a scale and polish every 6 months and I need it even though I really look after my teeth. Apparently some people are just susceptible to a build up of tartar and I'm one of them. :(

  4. I put of dental visits too. Can't stand going there! I can imagine my report wouldn't have been as good as yours though, Ron. They would likely have had to remove my entire mouth had I gone that long. I look at a piece of gum and get a cavity.

I'm also the same way about not wanting to eat and drink anything for the rest of my life after a good cleaning. It's sort of like mopping your kitchen floor until it sparkles and then dumping a pot of coffee on it.

On another note, I've awarded you the Lovely Blog Award. You'll see that when you visit! (Consider this notification) lol

    Have a wonderful weekend!

    XOXO

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  5. Ok, I want to know how you've actually been going to a dentist for other work and gotten out of a cleaning for 20 years???

My dad refused to ever go to a dentist when we were growing up. He had a bad experience in the Navy with a dentist and just refused. I think around age 55, my mom finally talked him into it. So that was about 30 years he went without going. And guess what? No Cavities!!!!!!!!!

  7. Gooood Morning TJ~

    *waving back*

Thank you, dear lady. I keep looking at my teeth in the mirror and saying, "Is that MY mouth?!?!?"

"You know, I had read once that the annual teeth cleanings aren't really necessary if, like you, do regular dental care on your own religiously."

Thank you for sharing that because I can believe it after what my hygienist told me. But, OMG...over 20 years?!?!? I'm surprised I didn't have ALGAE growing between my teeth - hahahaahahahahaha!

"...I have extremely sensitive teeth due to my illness so I have to use Sensodyne."

Yes, that's the toothpaste my mother uses because she too has sensitive teeth.

"And anymore you feel like you have to take out a second mortgage just to get dental work done! Sheesh! :o\"

I KNOW what you mean because I sincerely thought my dentist was going to say that I needed a TON more work done on my teeth. And I don't have dental insurance, either - UGH!

Thank you. Isn't the animated graphic a HOOT? I found it yesterday online and thought it was perfect!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a super Friday and a marvi weekend!

  8. Wow, that's a fine set of chompers you got there, Ron. You can use them as a flashlight in case the hurricane causes a blackout! I guess your dentist won't be getting that condo in Bermuda after all, at least not on your teeth! But you may want to eat something every now and then just to keep your strength up. Have a great weekend, keep brushing, and tell the hygienist you'll see her in another 20 years!

  9. I am jealous! You have lovely teeth!

The dentist said the same to me. "Your teeth are remarkably clean - shame about the gums and jaw bone"

OK, he didn't say the last part, but he did say that my jaw bone around the teeth is wearing away and my gums are not good. I have very little bone actually holding my teeth in and for this reason most of my teeth are slightly mobile. I haven't needed a filling since I was a young girl but I am losing my teeth one at a time, purely because they get loose. Apparently it can be caused by two things. By smoking and it's also something that you can inherit. In my case it was probably both.

  10. Goooood Morning Valerie~

    "Ooooh my favourite subject. NOT!"

HA! No, me neither. However, after this past month I think I may go back to school and become a dentist so I can do my own teeth!

"I bet when you flash a smile people fish out their sunglasses."

Yeah, my teeth are BLINDING them - bwhahhahahahahahahahahhaha!

I LOVE this new hygienist I'm going to. She's very thorough, yet gentle. So is my dentist.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, dear lady. Always fab to read your comments. Have a glorious weekend!

Aw....thank you. I'm tickled to death with my clean teeth. I keep looking at them in the mirror.

" I have a scale and polish every 6 months and I need it even though I really look after my teeth. Apparently some people are just susceptible to a build up of tartar and I'm one of them."

Yes, you're absolutely right! And 'I'm' one of those people too. My teeth are very susceptible to tartar build up. I think it has something to do with the acidity or alkalinity in our saliva. I already made another oppointment for 6 months.

Thanks so much for stopping by, m'dear! Have a sparkling weekend!

"I put of dental visits too. Can't stand going there!"

Yup.....I sooooooooooo know what you mean. That's why I was dreading going for a check up and a cleaning.

"I look at a piece of gum and get a cavity."

I'm AMAZED that I don't have more cavities myself because I LOVE gum and candy.

"I'm also the same way about not wanting to eat and drink anything for the rest of my life after a good cleaning. It's sort of like mopping your kitchen floor until it sparkles and then dumping a pot of coffee on it."

Bwhahahahaahhhahahaha! Sooooooo true! After I got out from my appointment, I went to Starbucks and had a cup of coffee. I then RAN home and brushed my teeth so they wouldn't stain!!!

OMG....and thank you for the blog award. I'll be sure to stop by just as soon as I finish here, okay?

Thanks OH SO much for stopping by, girl. Always grand to see ya! Have a spectacular weekend!

"Ok, I want to know how you've actually been going to a dentist for other work and gotten out of a cleaning for 20 years???"

Well, to tell ya the truth I HAVEN'T been going to a dentist except when I have a problem with my teeth. I've not been for a check up in over 20 years too. Shhhhhhh....but don't tell anyone that!

I don't have dental insurance, so I've been avoiding going to the dentist.

    And yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to your dad!

"So that was about 30 years he went without going. And guess what? No Cavities!!!!!!!!!"

    See that!

I too have had bad experiences with certain dentist, thus, I don't go as often as I should. I just found this new dentist (over a year ago) and really like him because he's not aggressive. He treats his patients like people, not just a mouth full of teeth. He's great!

Thanks so much for stopping by, dear lady. Have a wonderful weekend!

Bwhahahahahahahahahaha! Holy shit, that totally made me HOWL! I just spewed my morning coffe while reading that!

    I LOVE you, WOMAN!

I've gotten into the habit of being discilpined with my teeth only because I don't have dental insurance, so I've been trying to take care of them myself.

"I have the teeth of my ancestors - toothless white trash"

Nooooooo, I don't believe that! You are NOT white trash. You're faaaaaaaaaaaabulous!

" I guess your dentist won't be getting that condo in Bermuda after all, at least not on your teeth!"

    Tee, hee...no he won't.

And it's funny, because every other dentist I've been to over the past 20 years has looked at my mouth with DOLLAR signs in their eyes. But, this newish dentist is very honest and non-aggressive. That's what I love about him.

Yes, unfortunately I've HAD to eat and drink something every now and then, but after I'm done I RUN to the floss and the tooth brush because I don't want them dirty.

Another OCD tendency of mine - HA!

Always so great to see ya, buddy! Thanks for stopping by.

  17. Hiya Babs~

    Thank you, kind lady.

My front teeth are in great shape, however it's some of my back teeth that are starting to give me trouble because of the old crown and bridge work I had done when I was in my late 20's and 30's. They need to be replaced :(

"but he did say that my jaw bone around the teeth is wearing away and my gums are not good."

Yes, and that's what I thought the dentist was going to tell me, that I had bone loss and weak gums after all this time of not going for a cleaning or even an annual check up.

My father was the same way. He had strong teeth, but his gums were the thing that gave him a challenge.

Can't teeth issues be a pain in the ass? It seems that whenever we have a problem, it's an EXPENSIVE problem :(

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend. Always so great to read your comments.

    HAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA! Ain't it the truth?

Last year, when I saw the oral surgeon (the beast) he looked at me with dollar signs in his eyes. And could swear I heard the sound of a cash register.

    *ching, ching*

    HA!

This dentist seems to be less aggressive; only working on what REALLY needs to be done with my teeth. I was shocked when he told me my teeth were not bad at all.

I have to say I am not much better when it comes to the Dentist. I think at the moment I am pushing three years but I know I need to go. Mine are horrible. No matter what I do, they are a long way from white, and they are cracked and chipped, and my gums are receding. I go regularly for check ups and professional cleaning and I don't smoke, so ... I'm guessing it's genetic. *Sigh*

After the hygienist finished my teeth, she said that some of the yellow will be on my teeth perminately because it's ingrained in the enamel. But to me, they'er still much whiter than they were.

Yes, I do think teeth are genetic because quite a few of my readers said the same thing about their teeth.

  46. you are the poster child for the benefits of flossing :) so glad you emerged unscathed and the bill for your office visit didn't require approval for a personal line of credit. and voila ~ pretty pearly whites.

sorry I'm so late in dropping by ~ weird stress at work. But Cristybella and I both send our love.

  47. Hey there Diane~

"you are the poster child for the benefits of flossing"

    *strike a pose*

    HA!

No, the last two visits I had to the dentist were not too-too expensive. However, when I have the bridge removed and replaced, I may have to take out a personal loan - OY VEY!

No worries, my friend. I love when you stop by at any time!

Sorry to hear about your stress at work. Trust me, I know how you feel because retail is getting progressively more and more stressful as the years go by with the economy.

    Sending ya a BIG hug....

    ((((( Diane ))))))

Thank you for stopping by. Have a great week!

    X to you and Cristybella!

OMG, know...it's seems that anytime you go to the dentist it's soooo expensive. I can't WAIT to see how much this new bridge is going to cost me - OY!

Yup...I have like FIVE root canals!
